Wheels for P3 Carbon? Zipp 999 or 808?

Should I put Zipp 999 (disk rear and deep front) or Zipp 808 (deep rear and front) on my new P3 Carbon?

Mostly for midwest races…IMWI 20 mph times, etc…

Thanks for your input.

Why not go with the faster of the two?

I’m buying either the 999 or the 808 to put on the bike…can’t decide which ones to buy. Disk is supposed to be faster but many have said that 808 is better for general racing (hills, winds, etc)…

This may help:

That does help, thanks. Still can’t decide though… :frowning:

If disposable income is not an issue…then buy a front 808, rear 808, and a disc…just a thought. Then you have most of your bases covered.

I was that was an option, but nope. :frowning:

999 is fastest. Disc are light enough now that it almost always makes sense to use them. If you don’t plan on going to Kona, buy the 999. A disc is really the appropriate wheel for almost every course…

According to Zipp (posted on this site) the 999s are 4-6secs faster over flat a 40k course. I would say the improved ride quality, improved handling and 200g of weight savings make more than a 4-6sec difference. Plus you save a couple hundred bucks. If you are going for looks or really want those 4-6secs, go for the 999.

I know your dilemma. I faced same problem when I bought my P3C. 808 or 999. I ended up going with 808 as if I had to race and the conditions did not suit a disc running an 808 front with my open pro’s would defeat the purpose. As soon as I can afford to spend more I am going to buy a 909 wheelset which will then give me the following wheel combinations 808,606,909,999 which will prove more versatile depending on course and weather conditions.

Hope that helps with your decision.

BTW P3C still looks awesome with the 808’s but a disc would look better.

I went with the 808’s…
I just like the ride quality MUCH better than a disk…noticeable in long races…

Yeah, but no cool “whoosh whoosh” sound as you pass people.

I put my vote in for the disk - my zipp disk is comfy to ride, and you just can’t beat it in a cross wind. And it’s so light that that shouldn’t be an issue.

LOL!>>>>You are correct sir…I am enjoying the stealthy pass tho…the can’t hear you till you are gone…
I really do like my 808’s…

even in a rolling hills to moderatly hilly race the weight difference is not enough to worry about. The disc will be faster and then so will you (hopefully).

The disc gets super cool points. The time difference between the 808 and disc is pretty much nil. If you want to go for looks, get the disc. Or, how about this- if you’re doing short course races, get the disc; if you’re doing long course (1/2 IM and up) get the 808 rear for comfort. Either way it’s a sweet setup.

Thank for all your feedbacks. I still can’t decide! I’m going to call Zipp in the morning in hopes to get another perspective. “Analysis Paralysis”

I can tell you from asking the same question that they will answer that the 606 has been their most popular and universally appropriate wheelset. The 808 they’ll tell you is more comfortable than the 999 and also legal on all courses. The 999 is the fastest, though… FAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTT!!!

Why compromise speed when you are building up the ultimate bike? It takes an extremely hilly course before a non-disk is faster than a disk. A rear disk should be only choice unless you are buying wheels for Kona or unless you have no mechanical ability to mount and maintain tubulars. If you’re going to be a bear, be a Grizzly. Go for the 999s.

VERY good feedback - thank you! I think I’ll go with the 999’s afterall…well, unless someone else convinces me otherwise now.

Enjoy those 4-6secs and bumpy ride.
