Will I have a problem bringing an extra wheel with me as a carry-on? I’m flying Delta if it makes a difference. Headed to IMFL on Wednesday.
it will depend on the flt. crew.
technically, it is not a ‘legal’ carry-on, so if they say no, then you will have to gate check it and it will go with other checked luggage. if it is not well protected, it will get trashed.
Has anyone tried this on an international flight? I have a wheel bag for two Zipp wheels. There is more space in the overhead bin so presumably it would not be much of an issue unless you can’t fit it through the xray machine or TSA says no.

Don’t be* that* triathlete. It will not fit in the overhead bin. It will not fit anywhere else in the cabin. As previously mentioned most flight crews will make you gate-check it - which is a big hassle for them. Put the wheel in your case and check it in properly.
Flying these days is such a circus. I enjoy it for the entertainment value these days in a backwards and weird kind of way - watching so many people contort and twist themselves around and around all the while making it a longer and longer process for the rest of us**!**
Depends on the airline and the flight crew but I’ve seen a pair of CrossMax mtb wheels in the cabin on British Airways. they are smaller than road wheels and they were open (not in a bag)
I just got back flying with Delta. I’d hesitate bringing a wheel on the plane. If it fits in the overhead bin the flight crew probably won’t give you won’t say anything. However, after watch 2+ people/flight stuff (punch and shove bags into any nook and cranny available) bags into the overhead bins , I would be very worried about damage. If you can upgrade to 1st class then it would be less of a concern. All my flights (4) ran out of overhead bin space with passengers still needing space. Because of more people bringing larger bags and some bags that were seriously too large, the flight crew was not as willing to store large carry-ons in their secret compartments.
Just my thoughts based on recent experience with Delta. I can’t blame the flight attendants, some of the bags were ridiculously large and needed compression gear to fit (and that wouldn’t work on some of the bags).
