Wheel Set upgrade advice

Looking for a good all around wheel, race and train, for a Caad 8 road bike. It has stock shimano wheels. I am looking at the Mavic Ksyrium Elite 2012, but have a few friends suggesting that I wont feel an upgrade from my stock wheels until I enter the $1000 price point area. Any thoughts?

What are you looking to gain from the new wheels?

I am hoping to see some increased speed and better bearings. I havent had any problems with my Shimano set.

racing and training on the same wheels is a constraint that causes a lot of pain - specifically because then you either have to change tires all the time, or race on slow tires, or wear out race tires training, and get lots of flats.

if on a budget - get a wheel cover for the rear wheel and a used hed jet 9/sram 80/zipp 808 front.

bearings are a red herring. as long as bearings are functional, fancier ones aren’t going to make you faster.

aero dynamics first, weight a distant, distant second.

Old Campy loose balls without the seals are your best bet for faster bearings. Yes, you will have to rebuild after EVERY race, but you will be faster.

Find an old set of Campy hubs (loose balls) and lace them up to some deep rims.

the ones you have are a great all around wheel.

I can’t thin of a rational reason to change them.

now if we just wanted to have some tite looking wheels that made our training rides a few grams of drag faster, we could get some Hed Jet 6s:

but thats $1,600

look around for those used, or the zipp 404 used.

.001 watts faster!

but you will be faster.

.001 watts, but every hundredth counts!!!
