They want to get a new set of Hed3’s, but cannot really afford both at the same time. So I was asked which one would be a greater benefit.
At first I thought rear since it’s the drive wheel and would probably benefit more then the front regarding rotational mass. Plus the turbulence coming off the frame etc… would make it more beneficial.
This might be true on a straight course with no side winds, but throw yaw into the equation and this could change drastically.
So I told them that rear would be more beneficial on a course where side winds were not predominant. The next “A” race would be Clearwater so I would think the benefit would probably be to upgrade the rear first.
Any arguments? other then the obvious and upgrade both.
I’d say buy the front first. In the future, he could upgrade the rear wheel to a disk (Renn - abt same cost as the H3). Then they would have the fastest wheel combo out there.
However, if he upgrades the rear first, and then the front later, he still wouldn not have the fastest possible combo. The need for speed, will drive them to buy a disk later on, and he would be out 1.5 times what he could have spent for a fast wheel combo.
I believe I read somewhere a while back that the front is the better choice because it influences the initial airflow over the frame. I can see though how a HED 3 on the rear would be a nice stiff wheel for power during accelerations.
Front would give more time benefit. BUT, a front H3 and rear box rim/spokes can be a bit unstable if he/she is not a proficient bike handler in crosswinds.
Yeah, I should have mentioned that he is a she… and she weighs ~ 115 soaking wet so a disc in the future is probably not and option. Although I agree with your point.

This is a big misconception. Weight has almost nothing to do with it. Its learning how to handle the bike. More TITS (time in the saddle) usually, will solve this problem.
Tell Kristin that I think she should get the front Hed3 first (I already made this mistake because I thought I couldn’t afford both). She can always get a used disc or something during the “off-season.”
As for control, I know she’ll be fine with whatever combo she decides to go with. At 5’4" & 115, I can handle most wheel combos and I’m not nearly as strong on the bike as she is.
So Clearwater, buy a front Hed3 and borrow a rear (Hed3 or disc). I’d loan her mine but I’ve got 650s. If she’s interested in a disc and can’t find one I can probably con Tony out of his if she needs a loaner.
not sure HED3s are a good choice for Clearwater. crowded messy bike course. heavy wheels won’t really help there especially since you expect to be accelerating and decelerating a lot overtaking and yielding every 10 minutes.
Nah, turned down the slot. I don’t race Tri in November. The Cyclocross and Mountain bike start getting really jealous and start bullying the Tri-Bike calling it a fragile little flower and telling it that it smells like a55 and such. It’s really distasteful… anyways I digress
I assume I have the right person…awesome job at steelhead. 30 seconds off a podium finish. Seems like the run is your place for some improvement and sad enough for me that your run wasn’t all too shy of my best standalone 1/2 marathon. You’ll have to teach me the secret to cycling…other than more TITS.
Yeah been working on the run more although I have to take off a solid minute there. Coming out of T2 right before the hill I had to P… and normally I don’t have a problem just going, but for some reason I couldn’t go and had to stop. I literally couldn’t hold pace like that. So I stop and start going and it was taking forever… I am standing there looking at my watch. Finally I was just “gotta go” I pulled up and just started running again.
Was funny that it was such a tight race. I mean we can all pickup 30 seconds somewhere, so I am not playing that shoulda coulda game, I think that it’s funny what my shoulda woulda could have been
Was that IM Hawaii where Reid got passed while peeing behind that tree?
Completely agree…you could always end up playing the shoulda woulda coulda game all the way up to first place every time.
It was a great race and you represented the Lou quite well…I’m just glad I am hopefully getting past the point that Ms. gwaveswims stops making fun of my cycling.
