When considering a wheel cover for a rear wheel are there some rims better than others. Are mid aero depth rims, 28-33mm, better than a typical box section rims. Not looking to go too expensive, but wondering if a mavic cxp33 is better than a regular mavic open pro rim or other options.
Also, typical costs for having one built from a builder? recommendations?
Do they make the familiar whir noise standard discs make, just curious.
thanks for any info you can provide

When using a box rim you will get a bit of a lip around the inner diameter where the cover meets the rim. Josh from Zipp has mentioned that there is a bit of an aero loss because of this. A wheel with a dish, even a 27mm will eliminate this. You can get the cover custom cut for whatever wheel you use from wheelbuilder.com.
They are very quiet and do not make the annoying (or cool depending upon opinion) noise that regular discs make.
The cxp 33 should work well. I use a cheaper older, Mavic rim, I think it’s a something- 22 and the cover fits great. I used to use an older Araya aero style rim and it fit well, too. There used to b e a number of “aero” rims with a similar profile and probably around 25 mm tall. I think they all should work. I think it should also fit well on a true box section rim like the MA-40 (if you can find one). The CH aero cover doesn’t fit quite right on the Open Pro and would require a little trimming. If you get the right rim, I don’t see the need for sending it to a builder. You will be happier if you have a wheel dedicated to it as a full-time “disk” I have run the cover for around 6 years and really like it. It doesn’t make the same noise, pity.
