Wheel Collapse at World Cup

Click on the men’s race video. About half way through, a british guy’s wheel collapses when he gets up to sprint and he takes out an Australian with him.

Wow, that front wheel just tacoes (sp?)!

That’s Will Clarke (GB) taking out Brad Kahlefeldt (AUS).

Has anyone seen a wheel fail like that? Hope Will wasn’t riding Zipps…

I guess that explains this picture I saw yesterday:

I have no idea why he is running in his bike shoes? Maybe he was bored walking back to transition.

That is weird. I thought he might be running it back to T2 to try to finish the race, but the results have him not finishing the bike. Maybe after he crashed he thought, “I’m going to run it in and win this race on adrenaline,” and then he ran half a mile in his cleats and realized it wasn’t going to happen?

At the very least the video explains why his front wheel is missing in this photo. Where’d his helmet go?

I watched the race live online. He was out out of the race for at least 5 minutes, because he stormed off the course shaking his head on video. So, there is no way he thought he was going to finish. Unless the crash jarred his brain.

Maybe he was running scared because he thought the guys on the mountain bikes were gonna come beat him up for being British. Sounds reasonable to me.

Ouch.

It happens, probably a result of a knock during shipping or a big pothole hit but that looked like a deep carbon rim (don’t know what he rides, the pics on his website show box section wheels so I’m assuming he’s changed equipment lately) and it doesn’t always take that much to damage one.

That could have been a lot worse, he’s lucky he still has a face.

What about Vanessa Fernandes continuing to kill it despite her tumble in T2. I doubt that a bookie would take a bet against her.

Poor Will. Next time I see him I’ll ask him. This could be some months away though, so don’t hold your breath.

Just went back to watch the women’s race, that’s pretty tough!

it was a zipp wheel
.

Actually I’m not sure if wheel failure cause the crash. The wheel was toast at the end, but it might be something else that causes it.

Look at this series of pictures, it looks like something goes wrong before the wheel collapses. I’m not sure though.
His wheel is pointing in a strange direction in the first shot, maybe it has failed there or maybe something else happened?

Looking at the sequence, I’m almost certain he got up to sprint and his left shoe came out of the pedal, and perhaps his shoe even went into the front wheel (not sure on that though). The wheel looks fine in the 3rd scene. It also looks like he de-nutted himself on the top tube - which would happen if his shoe blew out of the pedal. I have a lovely long scar on my leg from losing a pedal in a sprint, which also resulted in me going down on the top tube…ouch

Looks like he popped a foot out of the pedal before he crashed. Maybe that knocked the bars sideways? Didn’t look like the tire rolled off the rim (may have been a clincher for all I know).

Caught one more. It does look a bit like his left foot unclips first.

It looks like someone beat me to it with the picture sequence–but on the video it looked to me also that he hit the front wheel with his foot, which caused it so go sideways. It DOES take a lot–an awful lot, to make a wheel fail from a radial impact. I think of all of the 200.00 mountain bikes given the ‘loading dock test’ in my bike shop days. Wheels are pretty strong when they’re going their intended direction. However, wheels that get sideways like in the picture sequence…
