Wheel choices (disc or not) and travelling

Hi

Coming down to final decisions on a bike purchase (looking very much like a Trek SC 9.X) and looking at wheels. They will be clincher! Am trying to work out whether to go for the:
Aeolus 9’s front and rearAeolus 7’s front and rearAeolus 9 rear and Aeolus 7 front cheapest wheels possible and put the cash towards a rear disc (so something like a Zipp Super 9 or the Mavic Comete) and deep front (A9 or Zipp 808?)Aeolus 9 rear with cover to make it a “disc equivalent” and Aeolus 7 or 9 front

I already have a set of the Mavic Cosmic SL wheels for my road bike (alu brake track, 50mm carbon fairing) and so was thinking that if it ever gets to a race day where I’m worried about crosswinds I can swap the front to the cosmic and leave the rear alone (or if I’m really worried go cosmics all round). Sure it’ll be a hassle with changing brake blocks and width settings but at least the option is there.

Any views on what combination is best from the above?

Best here being subjective but meaning aimed at HIM tris with occasional full and a few Olys as well. Most of my races will involve me and the bike getting on a plane to get there. So, bike box required. I have a Bike Box Alan which has been great for the road bike but if I end up with a disc that’s a bit of a problem as the box has a central stiffening pole which can’t be used with a disc in as it needs to go between the spokes. For that reason I’m thinking I might actually be better to get a wheel cover and just put it on “at destination” as it would make travel a whole lot easier.

How do people with disc wheels deal with air travel normally - what are the preferred solutions?

Cheers

choice 1 or 3 are both excellent. Choose based on how confident/courageous you are about handling.

If you ever get disc envy you could try the disc cover but they are hard to fit in the Speed Concept. The difference between a modern 9 and a disc is small, so if you get a good deal on the 7/9 through project one, do it.

I run Aeolus 7 front and rear. D3s. Wonderful wheels. If I did it again I’d go 7 front 9 rear (got a deal on the 7s). The difference between a 9 and a disc will be minimal (like 30secs over an Iron bike leg).

Handling should be fine in all conditions. I live in CFL and even in stout side winds all I get is a steady push.

Be forewarned, braking leaves a lot to be desired. Also, have your shop setup the brakes.

Thanks both - sounds like the Aeolus 9 might be a good choice out back and I can (at least for now) leave a disc for another day / another thinking process.

Now just need to think about whether to go 7 or 9 up front and how worried I’m likely to be re crosswinds with either.

Cheers

My thread about my Aeolus 9 front wheel trying to kill me.

Hey GMAN - thanks. I found that thread and read it while trying to form some views on what to go for. Sounds like gusting winds and a D9 front is nobody’s friend!

Cheers

I use to ride the Aeolus 9 d3’s all around and although it still remains one of the fastest set of wheels I’ve ridden, it was sketchy on the windy days.

Before I had the Aelous 9’s all around I had the 9 rear 7 front and that was my favorite setup to this day.

When I made the switch from my Bontragers Aelous’ to my HED Jet non f/r 50mm front/ disc rear I immediately knew I made a mistake.

If I can do it over again I’d probably get the Aeolus d3 9 rear/ 5 front. Or test out a different brand i have not yet tried such as Reynolds Aero or Vision Metrons.

Thanks - very useful!

Any feedback on Zipp 808?? i do have an old set of 404 …however …my new bike is a 11 sp … due to age …i cannot convert my 404 . .suggestions?
