Wheel advice (3)

i was thinking of putting a zipp 1080 on the front and rear.would it be better to have a 808 on the front.i ride a 54 and only way 145 lbs so i have been told a setup like that would be better than a disc.what about h.e.d.,do you think that is a better product than zipp?

HED and Zipp have roughly equivalent products.

A 1080 up front might be a bit much to control on a windy day.

A 1080 in the rear would be great but a disc would be better.

to a close approximation a disc is better than anything no matter the wind.

so if i get a disc on the rear should i get a 808 on the front?

I think this was discussed last week. . . Disc in back, 808 or 404 (if really windy). You can use a 1080 up front and back and still be ok. . It isn’t like running a disc vs a 1080 is going to save you half hour or anything. . .

thanks
.

I am sortof in the same boat as you. . based on the threads here this is what I have concluded (no scientific data or personal experience to back up anything), just the search feature.

Based on a normal day, not really windy.

Fastest: Front: 1080 or 808 Back: Disc or wheel with wheelcover
Faster: Front:808 Back: 1080
Fast: Front 808 Rear 808
Good: Front 404 Back 808
Decent: 404 all around. . .

Now throw in wind and or major hills. . then might want to go lighter, but the argument is still made for Disc in back and 808 in front (for really windy/hilly conditions).

Did I miss anything? Anyone?

You should buy all of the Zipp wheels, then you can run any combination you want on any day.

IMO I would run a disc/808. I have never run a 1080 front but I do have an 808 front and it gets a little shaky in 10-20 mph gusts and I am 5’9" 150lbs. It also depends where you live. If you race alot of hilly courses then the 808 might be better because of the weight savings and more compliant ride. I would not worry about the disc rear though, I always run a disc regardless of conditions.

at your size a hed3 front and a disc or hed3 deep rear would be the best handling and fastest set of wheels. energy used trying to control your bike in a windy day is less energy you will have for the run.

FWIW I do not notice that much of a difference in how my front 808 handles as opposed to the 404. If it is really gusty they both catch the wind. Once you realize that and get used to it makes little difference. Putting the cover on the 808 in back seems to make the front get caught in the wind less. Have noticed that the effect of wind on certain wheels is usually espoused by those that have not ridden them extensively. Not sure about a 1080, never rode one.

i use to have a set of 808’s and now i have a hed3 front and a disc rear. the hed 3 and isc seem to handle better in not only gusts but consistent cross winds. I am of similar weight and probably height to original poster.
