Getting some training wheels built and looking for a bit of advice. Anyone have any views on Mavic Open Pro rims v. the CXP 33?
I’ll be using them for training only and need something that is bullet-proof. Weigh about 74kg and ride on pretty good roads that involve the occasional boost over/off curbs.
Thanks for any input. Sorry there’s no explosions, sex or violence.
I am with John on this one- for what you do and what you weigh, the CXP 33 with 36 spokes would be just about bomb-proof, albeit heavy. But as I always say- train heavy, race light. If you can’t readily get 36 spoke, 32 would be plenty.
The taller rim profile and the shorter spoke (in a built wheel) will definitely make a much more sturdy wheel. Open Pros are still good rim, but I think you would be happier with the CXP.
I have used Ambrosios quite a few years back. They were nice rims. FiR, I am not familiar with, except they have had a presence in the pro peloton, I know that they produce everything from cheap to the sublimely expensive.

Hi,
I ride cxp33 with 36 spokes as training wheels. They are absolutely perfect.
I have CXP-33 laced to ultegra as my training wheels and have had no problems at all. I am 155lbs (70kg) and ride ok roads but in the spring they can be crap, tons of cracks and holes from the NJ winter that you sometimes can’t avoid unless you want to be run down.
I actually have 28 hole laced 2x-f 3x-r with db spokes and have not had to touch them in over a year. You may want to go 32 to get them bombproof but I don’t see a need for anything more then that.
FiR is hard to get here, but in Europe looked upon as highly as Mavic is here. Ambrossio is a bit less money and seems to be a “catch up” brand…you know, Mavic comes out with Ceramic sidewall surface…Ambrossio catches up for the next 2 years.
I cant remember where, but I know that I read a study that a 32 spoke 3 cross wheel built with Brass mipples and eyelets (rims with eyelets) was as strong if not stronger than even a 36 spoke wheel. There if I recall was an issue where a hub flange on the 36 hubs was not as strong as the 32 - being as there is less metal there. Something like that.
If you want that bomb proof wheel I would myself get the Open 4 CD, NOT ceramic (lots 'o cash for that and for what? These are training wheels). I would make sure that I had Wheelsmith Spoke Prep on all the spokes, use a Tensiometer of some sort (I prefer the Hozan one over the Wheelsmith one). I would make sure that the wheels are brought up, prestressed, unwound and taken back into dish and true. I would use Velox rim strips and a good tire. Make sure that you get a wheel with eyelet’s though…that makes the build up easier and provides a cleaner interface from the nipple to the rim.
Dr Doom I had fir supper rialto grid wheels build in approx 1995 rode them to train and race front bladed 18 spoke radially laced with duraace hub rear bladed 24 spoke 2x with mavic hub. used them 6-7 yrs and haven’t been touched. reasonably light and pretty bombproof considering the roads here in OK. My wife rides them now and says she can feel they are lighter than her wheels.
