Reading the posts on the custom girlie paint job got me laughing at the strong responses from some people. I thought it was a great paint job but I could never handle having something like that myself.
Personally, I think amateur athletes with bikes and clothing covered in corporate logo’s (of companies they’re not sponsored by) is totally stupid and the chart -topping pinnacle of lamenes is… GETTING AN IRONMAN TATTOO ! At least the guy with the girlie bike has a little individuality and isn’t a corporate marketer’s slut.
Your response seems pretty strong, I mean calling people lame. I don’t have any tattoo but who cares? If you want a Mdot tat then get one. The intent is to mark the accomplishment not to market for them.
As for amateurs with bikes and clothing covered in logos where is the line? Do you take all the logos off your stuff? How many logos is too many? Lame is making a decision based on the fear that someone like you will be sitting around calling them out as lame.
My first Ironman was a very meaningful experience, on so many levels I cannot begin to describe. I got an Mdot tatoo as a reminder (to me)of the event and the emotionan gauntlet I experienced. Call me middle-aged crazy (it was cheaper than a porsche and I don’t have enough hair for a ponytail, already did the earring thing), call me lame, I don’t give a damn. I don’t feel that I am out to promote any specific brand. I buy a shirt if I like the look, feel and fit. If it has a brand logo on it, so what? If you have to go out of your way to belittle others based on a cursory glace at their clothing, ink, etc., then maybe you need to do a little self-examination.
I’m not offended by your comments, my feelings aren’t hurt. I just question why you feel the need to make them.
Peace.

WHY ?
Only a tiny percentage of the worlds population belong to this great fraternity.
I race with some pretty proud guys and girls that have tats ,both M Dot and 140.6 that would take offense to that.
I’m getting one before the season starts…its a big deal to a 41 yr old !
I have yet to have anyone approach me and ask me about my M-dot tattoo and then proclaim that they want to devote 6 months of their lives so that they can be in pain and anguish for 11 hours.
My usefulness as a corporate marketers slut is nil.
I personally try not to buy anything with a logo on it, but where to draw the line? I think if we wear clothing or have tattoos with corporate brands on them we should commit to endorsing them. Does that make one a corporate stooge? I say yes, but so what. Try to never wear a logo. Its impossible. Ever try taking a painted laytex logo of cycling clothes? We could ride naked. Maybe that is the solution. And for all those who aren’t bothered by Nike tatoos, what if it were Joe Camel? Would that change things?
Our class crest at the Naval Academy had a topless mermaid in it for about 6 months until the administration caught on and didn’t buy our nautical accuracy argument. We ended up covering her bosoms with long flowing hair. Seemed funny and cool when I was 18 but that was a long time ago.
