hey folks - just moved to tucson… did the colossal ride several times and loved it so i got an apartment on spanish trail at the start of the ride. also checked out sabino canyon. my work is out east so i’ll spend most of my time out there… only downside is i am relegated to the 25m pool at la fitness.
anyways, where are all the tri-geeks hiding? i couldn’t even find a tucson tri website, but i know there must be a club, right? desert dude gave me some running and cycling tips but any other help would be appreciated…
google tucson desert heat tri club. Then for even better riding, move to the west side or east of Swam anyway. Ride Starr Pass, Gates Pass, Kinney road (take a L after descending Gates when the road ends). Not to mention heading up AJo to Sandario to Mile wide around Kinney the finish up climbing the back of Gates. The 14% feels real good after 75miles. Trust me. Tucker is in charge of the Desert heat tri club.
Swimming? Forget La Fitness go to masters at the U. Fasttwitch on this board swims there as do several olympians, some with Gold medals and world records. Stay out of that lane. Climb Mt. Lemmon (your east so this should be weekly). Find the Rillito river path. Do the splash and dash on Wednesday at the corner of Alvernon and Broadway. Just SW of Broadway at the pool. I think they are 800 or 850/5k. Groups ride everyday from the U, call Fairwheels for the start time.
TriSports.com is located in Tucson. They are certainly in the know about training, racing, and general triathlon goings-on. Drop 'em an email or a call. They are SUPER friendly!!
Email me at nik@trisports.com if you would like more. There are tons of rides as well that would take up too much space. Mount Lemmon will be your friend out east.
The Cookie Cabin at the top is awesome. Huge cookies and some real food too (pizza slices, soup). You deserve it after climbing Lemmon. Plus, the added weight will help you get down quicker
