Whats the depreciation value like on race wheels

Just wondering how much the depreciation value is like for race wheels. I’ve seen closeout wheels 08 going for nearly half msrp, and I see some rims 5 years old not far off from last years closeout price. Is this the norm?

Depreciation is enormous. So much so that they’re worth practically nothing after a year or two. If you have a decent pair in 650C size, though, I could probably help you dispose of them very cheaply.

The key point to remember is that almost all bicycle products are only warrantied to original purchaser. So, although you’d think that somebody would love to save $200 on a pair of “lightly used” carbon fiber wheels, it is not really worth it when you consider that when they break, you are screwed.

I buy used equipment pretty frequently, but I look for 50% off suggested retail as a starting point.

Like any product, price is determined by the market, supply, and demand. Some highly desirable items retain value well, other less in demand, not so well. In general, I agree with Android that around 50% of new is the highest a used product should sell for. Closeouts/sales on new stuff are usually 25-40% off, so used should go for less than that since there is no warranty.

Depends on the brand, when you bought them and how stupid the buyer is…

My 4 year old Zipps have increased in market value over the same period.
