I don’t really get it. Seems like half of the ads in Runners World, Competitor etc are for “races” involving obstacles, fire goofy outfits and ridiculous claims of being the toughest race in the world.
Do you do them? What do you think of them?

They are a way to make decidedly “not hardcore” peope feel like they are hardcore.
The pool of athletic people is tapped. Now RD’s can make money from non-athletic people.

I’ve done one. Got beat to hell going over/under all that crap and ran on a team that was faster than me (not saying much). Kicked my ass. Nice change of pace. Our group set up in the parking field with beer and food, all day tailgating due to the various start times. Fun stuff.

Sprint-distance triathlons?
I do them and absolutely love them…
And the thing is, the one’s that claim to be the hardest race in the world aren’t really that hard. Well, they are all hard, but not ridiculous.
It’s definately harder than a straight 5k.
No need to dress up silly. IDK where that started.
If anyone says they are easy, they either haven’t done this one http://www.sbsdmudrun.com/ or one similar, or they walk it…
I always do one in the off season to have fun
they make triathletes feel strong and make crossfitters feel like they have endurance.
cheers!

They’re a fun change of pace. Lot’s of them are team races you can do them with friends and family that might not otherwise get out and race. Like any race, they’re as hard as you want to make them. If you haven’t done one, give it a try. You may have some fun.
take them for what they are worth. for some folks it is the toughest thing they’ve ever done. for others it’s just a change of pace.
i did one last year as part of a team. competition was not high on our list of priorities, but drinking beer and wearing ridiculous costumes was. pretty fun way to spend a saturday afternoon.
** What’s the appeal of the “Mud Runs”?**
It’s something different. Think outside-the-box.
It’s odd and ironic that an out-there, out-side-the-box sport, originally, like triathlon was, now very much, has people, completely inside-the-box!

Do something different!
I have done the one at Pendleton (10k) for the last 5 years. I run with a 5 person team of some college buddies. Its a good chance for us to hang out. We booze it up afterwards. It’s fun to see who falls into the worse shape each year.
And - THE POST RACE CO-ED SHOWERS. Nothing better than seeing a super dirty girl in spandex get into a cold outdoor shower.
Our motto: “Come for the race, stay for the shower.”

Yeah, that’s an important point.

Well shit…if they’d advertised this part, I would have signed up a long time ago!
I did Muddy Buddy a few years ago with a friend. Lots of fun, actually. You might be shocked at how many triathletes and fit people showed up. Great change of pace for those who aren’t laser focus on winning AG or OA in tris.
A local newspaper reporter did a “Warrior Dash” run and filmed it with a hero cam. Here’s a link to the video and article. In addittion to the typical walls, mud pits and cargo net climbs, you had to jump a fire pit, run over and around a maze of junked cars and crawl on your belly through a pitch black tent maze with unidentifiable things hanging from the roof. I’ve never done one but it does look like fun, in a sick twisted sort of way. http://www.detnews.com/...out-your-inner-Rambo
No different than Halloween. It’s one of the few occasions where it’s socially acceptable for girls to dress & act slutty. That said, guys follow by the hundreds.
Yup, that about sums it up!!!

.
I thought about doing one, until I saw the price tag!
Shorter races for the masses and they get to feel “hardcore”. To me they just scream ripoff.
Because Bert The Conquerer did it!

It is like CX for people without bikes
