What's the "3 hour marathon" of the 1/2 IM?

In your view what would you consider to be the performace standard equal to a sub three hour marathon of a 1/2 Ironman race?

sub 4:30. In the last four years I’m on the “brink” for both. Some days I’m under 3 for a marathon, some days over. For half Ironman, some days in the mid 4:20’s some days in the mid 4:35’s. Times are a bit harder to “nail down in tris”. Our sport is more affected by water currents and waves in the swim, as well as hills and wind on the bike than running is (by hills and wind). Plus the length of T1 plus T2 can be as short at 2 min at the low end for a race with a small Tzone to as much as 5 min if the Tzone is huge.

Anything under 1:20.

The question wasn’t about half marathon times. It was about the half Ironman equivalent of a sub-3 marathon.

I’d say around 4:30-4:45. Something like:

Swim: 25-30 min.
Bike: 2:30-2:45
Run: 1:25-1:35

Very solid times, but within reach for good age groupers.

I’d say more like 5 hours. A 3 hour marathon is not too terribly hard.

sub 4:30.

That sounds about right to me. I’ve never run a marathon, but I’ve gone 1:21 for 1/2 which says I could probably go sub 3:00 for the full thang, and my best 1/2IM is 4:20 with my typical race being somewhere between 4:30 and 4:40.

4:30 on a flat course, 4:45 on a hilly one. I’m about even in all 3 disciplines and I almost always run a 2:55-ish marathon and go 4:30-4:45 for a half.

I would say the full IM equivalent is probably about 10 hours, again because I normally go about 9:55 for IM distance.

I’d say 5 hours. I’ve done marathons in the low 2:40’s, best 1/2 IM is about 4:50. I’m a slow swimmer and best marathon was 20 years ago.

Johnny, if you are a 2:40ish marathon runner and a 4:50 half Ironman fellow, you have the engine to go sub 4:20 at some time, assuming you can get your swim in the 35 min range. With 2:40isd marathon speed, a sub 1:20 half marathon split is easily in range and if you pile on a few 10,000 km seasons on the bike, you’re a 2:25 rider on a rolling course just cause you have the engine. You just need to really put on the bike miles and learn to love your bike.

There is no time that compares as it depends on the course. You can’t compare courses like St Croix or Worlds Toughest Half to your typical 1/2 IM course. Times at the two course mentioned will be at least 30 minutes slower. Also any given race could be a lot slower depending on the weather as in the Boston Marathon and Wildflower races this year.
