i sweat a lot, especially when i’m on the trainer at home. i’ve been noticing a new stink after a couple hours and i’m trying to figure out what it might be. it kind of smells like ammonia is coming out of my skin. i feel like i’m pretty good about nutrition. i stick to a bottle and gel every 30 minutes and if i’m hungry part way through i’ll have a clif bar.
anyone know what this new stink is? is it just the smell of salty sweat?
I’ve noticed the same though it’s usually long, intense efforts like a him or the like that really bring out the nasty funk. My running shoes from this summers race were pretty god awful. I tried a suggestion posted elsewhere on here, natures miracle pet odor remover and it worked wonders!

If it’s an ammonia smell, I agree, too few carbs. Years and years ago, I had a litttle sewing business making sport clothing and one of the things I made were the posing suits for body builders. They would come for a final fitting in the last week before their contest and every single one of them smelled like that. They were oblivious to it as they were in full-on carb-depletion stupidity by that point. (probably shouldn’t have even been allowed to drive vehicles at that point).
I get this fairly regularly with longer runs or bikes. I don’t think swimming triggers it, but it would be hard to tell between the pool chemicals and the shower shortly following.
Perhaps I’m latching on to the wrong details too much, but it sounds like it might be a good thing, signaling fat burning as opposed to just sugars…
Agree, no matter how hard I shower after a swim any trainer session later in the day makes me stink of the pool after an hour or so. Either that or you have pissed yourself mate and are going too hard to have noticed!
Yep to all the above. The explanation i read said it happens when you dont have enough carbs and glycogen stored in your body. Your body will start stripping and burning nitrogen molecules out of amino acids and the by product is ammonia. Not sure if thats true…but sounds good
If you aren’t getting enough calories and your body starts burning a lot of protein you will smell god-awful. Breath will be bad as will BO. I found this out because many years ago I decided that the way to loose weight was to “not eat” so I would fast for a week, the only food intake was 1 glass of OJ in the morning and 1 glass of skim milk at dinner time. Dropped the pounds sure enough but zero strength when I tried to ride (duh!) and I could smell my body consuming itself.
I get this from time to time as well- especially when I sweat a ton! I think it’s my shampoo. I don’t know what kind you use- but I have thick long hair and my head sweats a ton! When I use certain brands (which contain ammonia- I recently discovered) I could smell it! Once I switched to pureology (chemical free) - no more smell. Hope that helps. I thought mine was a carb issue initially, but it didn’t make any sense to me. So if lack of carbs doesn’t make sense to you- check out your shampoo label!!

Or you could just wash them in the washing machine!
I’ve been washing my running shoes in the machine for about 20 years now. Once a month or so. I don’t have overly stinky shoes, but I do sweat a lot, so I do it mainly as a preventative measure. And based on my shoes, there is NO adverse effect to the shoe, except my wife complains that I keep throwing out perfectly good running shoes, because they look so good and don’t even stink!
Take the foot bed out, and cover them with a bit of floor cleaner (Handy Andy or similar). I cover the entire shoe, inside and out, with the handy andy, give them a light brush with the dish brush (which I then put through the dishwasher) and then wash them in the machine with several other pairs of shoes. I let them air dry in the sun and voila, new shoes!
I’m researching this. I expect the bodybuilding article is my answer, but one twist I did not see mentioned there or in this thread is that for me the smell seems to be internal - in my nose! It doesn’t seem like sweat to me. I smell it in the shower after the workout… and right after the shower, and it’s when I slowly inhale through my nose. It is so strong to me sometimes that I ask my wife if she can smell it, and she never can. I suspect it’s the same deal as noted in the article, but the disconnection from sweat/excretion is interesting.
I used to get this a lot. Someone told me its your body burning muscle instead of fat because you don’t have enough carbs to burn. Sound good? It isn’t. It’s probably not good for your body. You probably need to eat more before and during the workout.

the above, if it’s a fairly peculiar smell. in general the need for carbs for fuel tends to be the easy answer. i’d go after this first, and see if that fixes the situation.
