Whats for breakfast and lunch on the devashish paul zero weight gain plan

is that paleo-ness? I ask because you don’t have any bread or pasta or anything in there.

Yep, my diet is >95% paleo. No bread, dairy, legumes, junk food etc. I have found it’s a pretty good way to eat. The dark chocolate sneaks in there because it’s so good for you (despite having a miniscule amount of dairy).

Cheers, Paul

Never had the Baker Breakfast cookie. Although I do like Clif bars a lot.
compared to a cliff bar the baker breakfast cookie is a piece of fat and sugar…beside that the owner’s husband and bill burke from PEM have trashed the triathlon community big time.

Hi Paul, I’m wondering: What do you do when you get invited to someone’s home to eat? What do you do when you have to fly through an airport and your choice is the $5 bag on the flight, or picking up some fast food for example at Subway? What do you do when you have to go to the company Christmas Party? What do you do when you have to travel to a race? What happens when your buddies invite you out for Moroccan, Indian, Chinese or Thai cuisine?
I’m wondering because I’ve tried all kinds of fairly rigid diets and in the end, when I actually have to be reasonably flexible and integrate with the rest of society, my body rebels on me, and the worst part is when this happens when I have to travel to a race, and perhap stay at someone else’s mom’s place. In 1993 at Ironman Germany, my host family fed my Schnitzel the day before a race…and I ate it and had a good race

If you guys can pull this stuff off, more power to ya, but it seems like you run the risk of missing out on the variety in life in general?

I got tricked into buying some double chocolate cherry bread at Great Harvest Bread Co. today. Glad the fam will be in town to help eat it, but it was a substantial part of my lunch today…

Good questions.

I would have thought by now that I would really miss the variety- but really I don’t at all. My taste buds have changed pretty dramatically in the last few months. For example, (and this was not even intentional) on the salads I changed from salad dressing to olive oil and pepper as dressing, then I dropped the olive oil. Now my salads are purely raw vegetables. I have not even come close to getting bored with my salads, berries, nuts etc. Perhaps I am unusual or lucky in that respect.

When I get invited to someone’s home to eat, I eat what I am given (I am not that strict). If I am asked to bring a plate – I usually bring a salad or steak etc.

There are a healthy fast food options. Subway has a great grilled chicken and spinach salad which is perfectly healthy. Many fast food options can often come with a fruit cup these days. Here’s another trick (sneak some walnuts/almonds) into the movie theater instead of popcorn. I admit, I usually don’t get very hungry between meals since I tend to eat a lot of lean protein at each meal. I was chatting with Loren Cordain a few weeks ago and he said he only eats once a day (an evening meal) and is perfectly satisfied hunger-wise throughout the day.

Travel to races. I usually bring fresh fruit in a cooler. If it’s an A-Race (which, this year were ultramarathons), I’ll bring fruit, Ensure high protein drinks, larabars, Clif Nectar Bars and all the gels, Gatorade etc I need for the run itself. For long training sessions, I usually just eat egg whites and fruit beforehand, gels Gatorade, coke etc. during the run. I usually have fruit with some lean protein after the run (sometimes I bring a little pre-cooked steak or salmon fillet in the cooler).

I’ll just eat whatever’s on the menu at the company Christmas party J

Have not had Indian or Moroccan in a long time. I was invited out for Chinese yesterday and politely turned them down and went for a run instead (and had a salad). Thai food, substitute the rice with vegetables.

I think your German hosts knew a thing or two feeding you schnitzel before an Ironman. Red meat is a good thing in my book. The longer and harder you train you go – the more you should eat (especially if it’s lean, grassfed beef).
