first off, i already have an older hed jet 90.
i’m thinking of picking up a good quality, race worthy, but not real expensive (probably second hand) spoked rear wheel to put a disc cover on.
so 2 questions really:
-
is it even worth the hassle (or just keep the hed 90)?
-
if it’s worth doing, could i get some wheel suggestions? something pretty light, quality, good hub, etc.
thanks in advance!
In case it turns windy b4 race you might want a non disc rear for a back up. I would say get fp40 - fp60 and get a disc cover for that.
I had an older rear Hed 90 also and it wasn’t a problem in wind. I’d check with wheelbuilder.com and see if they can cut a disc cover for that wheel.
Except of course windy days is when you want a rear disc. They become even faster relative to other wheels on windy days.

I have alway’s noticed that during cross winds it is harder to handle then my non disc wheel. Are disc’s allowed at kona?

It might be harder to handle (at 175lbs I’ve never experienced that) but its got less drag =)
And why?
Is it not the winds?
You hit the nail on the head.
This is what I’ll be using for my next project disc wheel. I’ve never used this particular wheel before but converting it to a covered disc wheel should be pretty straightforward.
It’s strong, fairly light and seems to have a good reputation for being a trouble free rear wheel.

Because rather than have the 100lbs triathletes who might blow off the road try to use a disc to keep up with the larger people, they dictate that nobody can use them.
Also kona winds, when they are bad, are like hurricanes. Not just “a windy day”
If you head out to the event and its “windy” you should probably still use a disc.
If you head out and its insane, well maybe not =)

i’ve had a disc in the past but sold all my race wheels last fall when i switched from 650 to 700 and joined the 21st century ; )
have never had any issues running a disc, or even dual hed3’s (which people seem to think is a problem when it’s windy).
picked up a 60mm front and 90mm rear in the off-season. wanted to move away from the disc. no real reason why. now i’m having second thoughts…
