Whats a good price to paint a frame?

Nothing too fancy, just needs a new coat, probably changing the color. Its my backup bike. Kind of dinged up. Mostly winter, base miles. Presently has the silver frame with red/black decals. Think I can peel the decals.

I was charged $200 by an auto restoration shop. Wasn’t the best result however because bike frames need different nozzles, so I’m told.

That’s what I thought. Are you sorry you spent $200 on it?

It was an old 80’s Miele lugged steel frame that I was restoring/upgrading with new 105 STI to give to my son. They did quality work on autos but were unfamiliar with bikes. The finished job was a 3.5 out of 5. In retrospect, I would have been better to take it to a motorcycle shop for repainting if I couldn’t have found a bicycle specific painter. That’s the one think I’d caution you against if you take to to an auto place - make sure they have the fine nozzles required for a high quality bicycle frame painting.

Frame stripped, primed, prepped, painted & clearcoated (gloss black) for $100 at local shop.

Spectrum Powder Works. They’re in Colorado Springs, but it’s worth it. Powder coating the frame means you won’t have to worry about paint chips or dings, one coat does it, and if you just want basic it cost me $220 to have it done, including shipping. I live in San Diego and out and back time was just over 10 days. I looked at getting it painted, but for less money I got a better product…and these guys specialize in powder coating bikes. It’s the vast majority of the business and they do good work. Great customer service.

My Fort frames are powder coated from the factory
it is very durable finish
screw paint on the every day ride

Thom.

Thanks guys. I’ll do something over the fall. Have it ready for winter base miles.
