Couple years ago i was on a VTC with some folks that don’t like their orgs names. Scotty Miller (now the commander in Afghan but then commanding this other org) pointedly raised the book up and said every commander at all levels on the VTC needed to read it.
I recall that after the VTC shut down the colonel in charge of the org i was down range supporting looked around and said: “Fucking thing is 700 pages. Anyone got a Cliff Note version?” He was joking (he’s actually kinda smart for a Ranger)
I actually had actually read it earlier in the rotation and brought it in to my workstation. It was heavily borrowed for several weeks. Probably even spent some time in the shitter. Oh well

Just started Power of the Dog as well (from your recommendation). I’m traveling at the moment so not able to read a lot at the moment. I know what I’ll be doing on the flight home!
I just read 3 completely different books in the last 2 weeks…
- Open - Agassi autobiography - may have been the best book I have ever read
- Just Mercy - made me rethink the death penalty
- Gospel - this is a book by JD Greear, great book written about what the Gospel is versus “Religion”
Looking for another book now - my wife wants me to read “Educated”.

I do have it and started reading but stopped to read Ghost Wars first and then will start again. My understanding of the early origins of bin Laden and the Russian occupation had slipped so wanted to get a better understand before moving to Directorate S.

Open was a really good, book reminded how glad I am I didn’ t have a dad like him.
Personally just finished Touching the Void again, and thinking about what is next. I took my son to see the Everest Opera a few months ago which tells the Beck Weathers story and that got me in a mountaineering book mood, so might be another off the old pile. If anyone has something new in that genera throw it out there.

An Army at Dawn by Rick Atkinson about the American landings in Africa during WW2. Well written and easy to read. Amazing to see the improvement in the US military from 1939 ranked 19th in the world behind Romania. Also rather interesting to read the initial draft requirements, at first no 18 year olds and at least 105 pounds… Really helps to hit home how bad the depression really was.
