What you can encounter here in Australia - pics

that one seems a bit small to some of the ones I remember as a kid. They would be stuck on the windows at night, scared my mom to death.

Does anyone else here have wolf spiders around? They usually come indoors here in the fall and spring (rainy seasons) and get f@%#ing HUGE. Big black hairy behemoths. I don’t think they’re dangerous but they sure do scare the crap out of you when you turn on the lights.

Yeah I think it was a huntsman.

He/she didn’t move an inch while I was in there, but when I had finished, I switched the light off & walked to the house. I realized I forgot something, so went back out &it had gone, under the cover of darkness! So it’s in there somewhere… As long as you don’t bother them, they won’t come near you. We’ve got a couple that appear each night out on the exact opposite spots on the front gate.

Wouldn’t want one crawling up my leg though.

Spiders are not my thing! I once hopped into my car and drove about 100metres before seeing a Huntsman sitting on my dashboard looking straight at me. I slammed on the brakes and jumped out the car!
No major issue except I’d left my wife and young daughter still in the car. I wasn’t going back in there for any money until my wife flicked it out the window with her shoe.

And yes I know I need to HTFU but it was really big and hairy!!!

If you think that’s scary, wait till mumma and dadda come looking for their little baby…

I had one of those bastards crawl out of the heater vent of my car and walk up the inside of the windscreen (driver’s side) while I was driving once…yikes.

BTW I think it’s a huntman which aren’t poisonous, still, I prefert to keep my distance.

Exactly, that thing is a wee little baby!

Ive seen ones bigger than my hand more than once. And by hand I mean with my finger spread out… I love living near the bush, but sometimes…

… when you are changing a puncture.

Seems pretty normal so far.

Time to look around at my lovely surroundings…

Did you see it?

Its a bloody small Redback, ya big pussy.

If you react correctly, its a dead squashed small Redback

Sheila???

Damnit why did you post that today? I’m in Mooloolaba for 3 days for work, I’m going to be looking over my shoulder during my training runs for the next 3 bloodly days!

Apparently the really big ones are in Queensland…

Scariest part of that photo montage is that there’s 1 quill stem and no Zipp wheels in a post on ST.

And your saddle is clearly too low. (in part as if I was there I’d want the saddle 6 foot off the ground and have 3 foot wedges between cleats and shoes to keep me well away from all the poisonous critters I may cycle past.

I’m bad enough in NZ with the large cockroaches that scuttle around. Thankfully the giant Wetas are now only in the wild offshore.

Give me the python anyday.

I’ve had lots of encounters with Huntsmans(men?) over my lifetime. Something about spiders I can’t come to terms with. Wolf spiders are like Huntsmen on steroids though.

I always laugh at Americans’ reaction to the things that will kill you in Australia. At least we don’t have Mountain Lions or Grizzly Bears. Not too many things in Australia can tear you to pieces and eat you. Except crocodiles. And Great White Sharks. And maybe Dingoes (if you’re small). Oh, and Drop Bears.

Drop Bears are mean little bastards.

You sir are a bastard! I’ve just done a complete spider sweep of my hotel room this evening, I think I shall sleep in peace…

I’ve been told that Australia has the largest/most diverse set of dangerous animals in the world. A miracle man can survive there.
Apparently the animals know this… I zoomed in even closer on that nasty spider…

If that thing had an orange t-shirt on I’d half expect it to start berating us in Portuguese.

I remember years ago in the SMH (Sydney newspaper) there was a story of a motorist who while sitting in peak hour traffic, witnessed a guy leaning into a screaming woman’s car and he appeared to be beating her. The guy who saw the apparent beating then jumped out of his car and gave the guy a flogging of this life. It turned out the woman had a Huntsman the size of a small rodent on her dashboard, stated screaming, and a passing gentleman went in through the window of the car in a effort to squash the spider. For his efforts he got bashed to an inch of his life. Not sure what happened the the spider!

Further zooming, over in the corner, I spotted the spider’s web…

OMG. hysterical.

The one thing I truly hated in Oz were these bloody magpies. These mongrels need to go. Oh, and aggressive roos can scare the shit
out of you too. Then you have blue bottles to ruin your swims, and box jellfish to ruin your life.

Forum member and NZ pro Keegan Williams is doing his bit to help you then …

Well, that’s it. Just have to burn the house down.
