What wheels do you race with?

I know nothing about this subject: How do you break in a wheel? What changes about it to make it faster?

(Oh I race on the only wheels I have - my training wheels - Mavic Ksyrium SL)

90% of my races HED3c (fore) and HED3Disc (aft)tubular.
or HED3c tubular (fore and aft.)

On my old bike I had an Alps/H3 combo and a 404 set. With my new bike, I switched to 700s, so had to buy new wheels. I just got a set of 808s. Bike is sort of kind of still in the box, so I haven’t actually raced anything yet. :stuck_out_tongue:

ksyrium SL’s are still nice wheels!

They’re great wheels, not at all aero and everyone seems to want aero these days.

i beg to differ re: “not at all”… the bladed spokes as well as deeper rim than your standard training wheel make them more aero than most. granted they aren’t some zipp fanciness and are better for road racing than tri’s, cause really in tri’s it pays to be an aero-weenie over being a weight-weenie, but still. for a “training wheel” that doubles as a race wheel, ksyrium SL’s aren’t a bad way to go.

i had a set of SL’s that i sold to a guy on craigslist in oakland a couple years ago… he worked at a gas station and also rode a bike and he wanted some “sweet rims” to match his car…

sorry to get a little distracted from the thread topic, just wanted to stick up for the ksyriums!

Oh don’t get me wrong, I love the SLs. It’s just that I couldn’t afford two sets of wheels at the time (blew all the money I had and some that I didn’t on the bike) so I went with one nice set of trainers.

In fact, a friend of mine who rides cyclocross said that they are huge in that arena.

Huge Ksyrium SL fan. Have trained and raced on them the past 3 years and loved them. Finally got some true “race wheels”, so this year I’ll be hammering the Blackwell Research 50mm clincher. I’ve already put 200 miles on them and they are smooth and fast. But still rock the Ksyriums weekly. I have two sets one on road bike and one on TT bike. ps They are bombproof. Have had one set for 3 years and had to do a 1/4 turn on one spoke to true it after about 2500 miles.

yes, they are AWESOME cross wheels. ideal for a tubeless setup with michelin muds… so light and fast!

ok. i’m done talking about ksyriums now

Race:
Front - 404
Rear - In the midst of an off season search for a box wheel/wheelcover combo.

Train: Ksyrium Elite’s - I’ve had very good experience with these. I weigh in between 190-200lbs depending upon the time of year and these wheels have served me well. Don’t much care about aero on a training wheel. Training harder = go faster on race day.

A pair of Rolf Vector Comp Clinchers. From what I’ve gathered on the interwebs they weight in right around 1900 grams. :frowning:

Old beat up Hed-3 front and old beat up Renn disc rear. Both Clincher. Looking for something new for 2009.

For the past three years I’ve been on Shimano WH-550s. 1850 grams. 24mm rims. Aw yeah. I did swap out my training tires for PR3s during races, though. I figured someone should respond who can’t afford nice race wheels.
Hey, don’t feel bad. I’ve been using the same Shimano R-550’s that came with my Cervelo Dual that I bought in 2006 for both racing and training. Simply can’t afford new wheels right now. I’m just now starting to have problems with them (at least the back wheel). I’ve had to have it trued twice in the last 6 months.
