What tubular tire fits in a Speed Concept Speed box

Hi All,

I am looking for a spare tubi (preferably 21 or wider) to go into my SC Speed Box…does anyone have experience with this OR tell me if the Tufo S3 Lite is the best tire for this set-up?

Thanks in advance.

If you’re thinking of using any Tufo as a race tire you need to read a WHOLE BUNCH of older posts using the search engine and ‘tires’.

I don’t care about how fast the tire is, god knows there are 50 million different opinions and probably threads on this forum… I am just trying to find a tubular tire to fit in my Speed Concept speed box.

Thanks all.

There isn’t alot you can get in that draft box. I put alot in and then couldn’t close it. For my longer training rides I put in a PB&J sandwhich, fits perfectly, or a Tufo in your case.

I have a Tufo S3 Lite that fits.

For me it’s a win for the following reasons:

1> It fits!
2> It’s a butyl tube!
3> it fits!

I’ve also gotten a vittoria corsa crono to fit, but I was a bit leary about using a latex tube as a spare…

I get the tire (with a razor taped to it), a cartridge, a lever, and an inflator head in there.

You have to get it in just right though or the box has a tendancy to pop open - if you get it right though - no issues at all.

Will try to shoot you a pic of it in the next couple days via email.

The Hutchinson Fast Air product fits in there, although it’s very tight and not super easy to get the top back off once you’ve gotten it on. That is what I carry when replacement might be necessary. If you absolutely need a tire, the Tufo may be the only thing that fits. I know that a Vittoria Corsa EVO 23 does not fit, and I am 95% sure that a Bontrager won’t either.

If it helps, in addition to our standard Speedpack 480, we also have a version of the Speedpack that mounts very cleanly on the trek speed concept via the integrated top tube bolt bosses. Our pack is considerably bigger and a lot more streamlined than the bontrager offerings. But I don’t think that the Speedpack 480SC is big enough to easily fit most tubular tires, one particular tire folded up just right might fit, but it would be snug. Here is a photo of this pack mounted on a 7-series speed concept, the mounting is identical on the 9-series:

More info about the 480SC pack on our website here.

I fit a Vittoria Evo corsa CX tubie 700x23 in mine. Its tight and you have to fold it perfectly but it fits. I also put in a tire wrench and carry my CO2 in the speedbox.

Thanks amigo!

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but any chance you can share your technique? I spent a good three beers and hour of effort to no avail a few weeks back. I tried rolling, folding and it just seems like too much tire to fit (vittoria cx and Zipp tangente tried).

Was thinking an old road silk 18 mm tire would do the trick as they feel and flex like socks but of course I’d rather be on a 22 or 23 mm tire for most races. Another thought I had was to use heat shrink wrap on it to really compress the heck out of it and eliminate any edges that could catch on the box top closure. Adds an extra step to changing a flat but if I am pulling a tire I am already pretty sunk.

I folded it exactly according to the shape of the speed box. After 3-4 folds I had to tape it down to maintain its compact shape. As the folds moved towards the back they became shallower to accommodate the taper of the box. There was also a small fold left over which fit into the top of the draft box.

PM with your email, I have to do a new one soon (switched out tires) and will take pics.

Yeah, just to bump this one. I’ve been going though this recently, and whilst the Tufo Elite <160g I got for the job fits in like a dream, it’s a bit flimsy for the open road in an Ironman. So, I dug out an old S3 Lite I used previously as a spare, and hey presto, after some fiddling around with folding technique, I can actually get the tubular, 2 x CO2s, an inflator and spare valve extender in (plus the valve extender ‘wrench’). I do need to use gaffa tape to secure the lid, as the tabs that hold it in place don’t quite ‘lock’ properly, and in my experience, even with less in the Draft Box, the lid can work loose on poor surfaces.

I’m feeling pretty chuffed that I can fit it all in a Draft Box though, meaning I can just carry a single cage zip-tied to the saddle.
