has a collegedoesn’t rain temperatures 65 to 85 year round (not too hot, not too cold)small town (under 100,000 people, 70-80 would be great)great athletic community - lots of group rides, a masters group, good running etc.
So, people of slowtwitch, what town is this? I’m looking at graduate schools, and this is my ideal community where I’d like to live/study/train. Where is it?
Camarillo, CA
Cal State Channel Islands
10 minutes from the ocean
tons of swimmers, cyclists, and runners
60,000 people
never rains
tons of mountains within riding distance
tons of races within an hours drive
60 minute drive from LA, so no traffic

My finacee went to UC-Davis and loved the atmosphere. They have a great masters swim program and the tri scene is pretty big. great farmers market too Can’t speak for size and weather (I’ve never been there), but wanted to throw it out there.
Sounds pretty close to Flagstaff… it gets somewhat warmer during the summer, and colder in the winter. NAU is there The metro area is around 125,000 now There is at least one masters swim program and quite a few group rides and great trails to run and mountain bike on. It rains very rarely… same with snow. However, it does both rain and snow.
I travel to flag quite a bit to hike, train and just hang out, it is a beautiful city and region.
Umm… aren’t we missing a couple of details? What major are you in?
I’m in a similar situation (Ph.D as I’m finishing my masters now) but came at it from the other direction. I’d love to have all those demands, but I first looked at the schools that actually had the program I’m looking for (the materials science end of EE–transistor level design and integration) and then started whittling down schools that didn’t otherwise fit the bill. So yes, schools like UCSD, UCSB, Stanford, Berkeley are on my very short list, but I need to be cognizant of the fact that some very good schools in the midwest and east coast have good programs as well (MIT, Cornell, Wisconsin, UIUC, etc).
Your education is AT LEAST an order of magnitude more important than where you end up climate/environment wise. You should be stuck in the lab for most of your life anyways!
Oh yeah, if any of you guys have other schools that I should be adding… feel free to comment. Interested in working with novel semiconductor materials (eg, not silicon, unless it’s doing heterojuction stuff) and focused on the bleeding edge stuff.
Yeah, Bend is in the “high desert.” I just got back from Bend, and they’re pretty proud of how many days of sunshine they get each year. Though I’m guessing it gets pretty chilly come winter.
Fantastic town for bike riding though. Superb, actually. Great scenery, decent roads, all of which have a wide shoulder marked for cycling, varied terrain, and tons of cyclists of all types.
