What to wear in teh cold

yeah, other than trainers, i don’t even have shoes. wear down jackets at 25ish (77Fish) - hell i have a down jacket on right now inside and it is (chekcing accuweather) 24C (75F) right now outside. warmer inside. so i’m a cold wimp. we’re going to the great white north (CA SFBay area) for about a month. i have an IM end January so i need to keep training. so i need hat, gloves, tights, right? some kind of jacket? long sleeved shirts, and when you run, do you wear shorts over your tights or just go pure lycra (not sure about that…)

winter is the time of year we pull out the sleeveless stuff because now we can run at any time of the day without heat stroke. we’re in a norte (thus the down jacket inside) but i have never had to wear tights to run. so please cue me in. cycling i’m just putting on about 100 layers and calling that good. swimming i’m totally fucked. well, you guys heat your pools, right? if so, maybe not so much…

thanks!!!

I live in the Bay Area and I run in shorts usually, with either a short or long sleeve running t-shirt, depending on temp. If I’m running early in the a.m. I’ll wear capris and a long sleeve top. Never a jacket – I just suffer the first 5 minutes or so until I get going. I do wear gloves since my hands tend to get really cold when I run. Never wear a hat – I’d get way too hot, but I have so much hair I think I’ve got about R15 insulation value there.

Swimming sucks – the pools are heated to about 80 but they’re all outdoors (at least those accessible to me) and it’s damn cold. Heading out in the rain now for a swim and I expect to freeze.

Riding: make sure you don’t go for coffee after the ride if you still have to ride home. Just go home at the end of the ride. Starting up again in the cold is the worst thing ever. You’ll want some good booties and good gloves for riding. Get a tech-fabric toque for running. It should also go under the lid on a ride. Cheapo $0.99 gloves for running are fine. Get about 10 pair. Shorts over tights, layer short sleeve techie shirt + long sleeve techie shirt + techie vest, techie toque, cheap gloves, I’ll go well below freezing with that setup. Jacket for cycling, yes. For running, no, HTFU.

I fixed your Cozumel DQ/DNF thing. Your timing chip ran/walked across the finish line after two laps.

sorry to be so dense, but what are booties and a toque, lid? thank you SO MUCH. i’m sure my sister will have the tech stuff in long and sorry, but for me HTFU will be just going out in that weather. I stupidly just checked accuweather for that area and OH MAI GAWD it is NINE DEGREEEEESS celcius. i hink i just had a stroke.

oh, and THANK YOU for the DQ thing. i walked straight to the med tent and never even thought about whether than was okay or not - i was in really bad shape.

I think you would find a vest over a long sleeve would work for you… it will keep you a bit warmer without being too hot. Cap or hat for the head and gloves for the hands… feet won’t be cold running. Maybe a capri type tight might work too. For cycling, feet will need booties or toe covers over your cycling shoes and something to keep your head and hands warm. You don’t generally generate heat like running so you need to dress much warmer.

There are many of us who would love to experience 9C for the winter months vs. 9F.

Good news: The SF Bay area is not the GWN.

Bad news: You don’t sound cold-tough enough to handle the fog. Chica, hacer ejercico en interiores!

i wrote this for new riders in our area, it gets a little colder but you can see a pattern in what to wear. Wool is a great fabric too.

Dress you up: Clothes for the winter months
Here’s a list of clothes and such that seem to work for me at least. Maybe I’ll start from the top:

  • I thin wool hat the covers my ears. I also use this when it’s real cold, you can cover up your face or tuck the face thing up inside the hat:

For the torso on a cold day, I wear:

  • a wool jersey–i have a bunch and wear them year round. They keep you warm when wet, which is key in our climate. And old wool sweater is fine too if not too thick.

  • Arm warmers

  • Sometimes another long sleeve jersey over top

  • a thermal winter bike jacket

  • finally, when it’s real cold I wear a big nylon touring shell over top of the above. It’s a lot of clothes, but when it’s 20 I want warm.

  • Regular shorts

  • Thick winter tights. I use the garneaus and crafts. I prefer tights without an insert, as the crotch tends to wear out and if you have shorts under, you don’t care

-wool socks, not too thick. I use smartwool dress socks

  • Winter MTB shoes. I prefer the MTB cleats in the winter as the speedplays pack up with snow. I’m using shimano shoes this year, before I had good luck with answer and lake

  • Shoe covers. You have to buy some pretty big covers to fit over your shoes, i like the ones designed for mtb.

For gloves, i prefer a mitten made of leather with sheepskin lining, i used these last year and they were great:

Lance is trying some of those hand covers you leave on the bike, might be good

  • My bottles always freeze. I have heard some people use a camelback under the riding coat, I need to try this.

When the weather is somewhat warmer, it’s really important to have items like a raincoat, vest, hat, knee warmers etc. that you can stuff in a pocket. It really stinks when the weather changes and you get caught out under dressed

Good luck!

so for SF I’d want arm warmers, wool jersey, lightweight wool cap, nylon wind vest, knee warmers, long finger glovers for cycling or XC skiing, not too think.

If it’s colder, knicker shorts in thicker fabric and shoe covers, but just thin ones are fine, nice for the rain too

for the rainy days, a clear plastic rain cape is OK in a pinch or some sort of quality rain jacket like a shower pass brand. Maybe something that folds up small so you can stuff in your back pocket is good.

A bike with fenders is really, really nice in the rain

Kathy… thats how I dress in -10c. Really. Start spending time in a walk in freezer.

Get a tech headband. Keeps ears warm and lets heat escape.

Can’t help you. I consider 55F t-shirt weather.
