What tires (tyres) was Frodeno using in Hawaii?

I want to make sure that I never buy them. Also for a guy form Germany, why does he not have a sponsorship from Conti!

Frodeno was allegedly using the Turbo Cotton tires from Specialized.

Well lets hope that his sponsorship allows for the use of someone else’s tires.

His luck has been pretty bad in his two IM races. I don’t recall him having any flats or penalties in any 70.3 race.

he said a mechanical issues caused him to have to swap a wheel(s)? before the start so he may not have been on the cottons

This def looks like the Turbo Cottons

His wheels were custom decaled to match his frame, so I guess he had multiple sets with those decals. I wonder what the mechanical was, because it was his front wheel that flatted.

He got 3 flats at Frankfurt.

I am sticking with my Conti 4000S II thank you very much which I have never had a flat on.

Interesting…I have well over 1000mi. on a pair of Turbo Cottons (might actually be more like 1500) with not a single puncture.

There was one somewhat large cut in the tread I got early on (first few hundred miles) in the rear that didn’t cause a flat, but I thought it would be prudent to put a tube patch on the inside of the tire (so the latex tube wouldn’t try to “extrude” through the small cut in the casing) and I used super glue to close up the tread “flap”. It’s been rock solid since.

Makes me wonder if his issues may be related to incorrectly installed latex tubes, much like I suspect some of Martin’s issues were with his TT prototypes a few years back…

That might be it but how many times can you install a tube incorrectly? I hope he figures it out or changes as I really want he to win.

Could also be a rim tape issue…trust me, I’ve gone through the painful learning of how to use latex tubes. That said, I don’t even know if he’s using latex or butyl…

In both cases the tubes/tires are installed by professional wrenches. Anecdotally Specialized has lousy “luck” with their newer racing tires. I’d stick to tried & true (Conti) if I were Jan, kinda the way Tiger stopped using Nike clubs 'til they were up to par.

Have Jack tell you his story about a “professional wrench” installing a latex tube in his wife’s wheel

My observation is that “pro wrenches” tend to not have much experience with latex tubes in clinchers.

Funny how even though installing clinchers is much faster, gluing tubs seems more fool-proof.

I burned a few latex tubes before I learned that going slowly is a lot cheaper.

The other thing at play is taking a spare on course could cost much more time than the minute it takes. Going from latex+turbo cotton to butyl+gp4000s is a chunk of time over an Ironman course.
