With a 7 month old at home, I have switched from my bachelor/newlywed workout schedule of 6-8pm to 5-7am. Everyone told be I’d be invigorated all day with am workouts. B.S. While my wearyness is probably more of a function of me going from 8 hours sleep to 6, I’m not sure this is going to be a long term solution after this season.
What do you get? And is there any such thing as really not being a morning person or am I just a wimp?
I got to bed around 10-10:30 and I get up at 5-5:15. Weekends I sleep till 6 or sometimes 7.
“And is there any such thing as really not being a morning person or am I just a wimp?”
Once you a few awesome sunrises, see some deer or owl coming in for the “night,” watch a zombie corpse appear from the fog to crawl back into the grave (oops, didn’t need to mention that one), you’ll be hooked.
i have a 9month old so we’re in the same boat. baby is in bed by 6:30. mom and dad have lights off by 10. i’m up between 4:45 and 6 for my a.m. workout depending on the day and the wkt. so to answer your question, i get between 6:45 and 8. two mornings a week i have coffee which really helps.
yes, you are a wimp. keep trying and eventually getting up early and trng will feel good.
I like to be well rested… I want to be able to get by on 6 hours of sleep but life goes to crap when I try it. But I don’t have kids… and it’s one of the reasons why I don’t want any any time soon.
Alarm goes off at 4:40am. generally out of bed by 4:50. I try and get to bed before 10:30, but that rarely happens. Generally 10:45 - 11:00pm lights out. 5-6 hours of sleep. I have 3 kids younger than 7, so if we get a night of uninterrupted sleep, it is a rarity (and a blessing!). Best of luck. You will acclimate. Coffee works wonders. Red Bull probably wouldn’t hurt. I’ve heard crystal meth helps as well, but probably not a good long-term solution.
We have a Five-year old and seventh-month old who does not go down before 9:30. Mom and Dad follow close behind, but I usually won’t fall asleep until about 10:30 -11:00. Up at 6:00 for morning workouts so I’d say about seven hours on average. However, baby usually gets up around 3:30 for 15 minutes so it’s not seven hours straight.
Weekends will sleep a bit later and workout during the day.
Alarm goes off at 5:45 AM. I roll around in bed for a minute, pet the cats, pack my gear and ride up to Starbuck’s for a coffee. I switch to my road bike, do the morning ride and then back to the shop by 10 or 11 AM.
I am usually in bed by midnight, sometimes 1:00 AM. Once a week, usually Sunday during the non-racing season, I sleep late until about 10 AM.
I start watching grainy documentaries on the History Channel or reading and my whole plan for going to bed early goes out the window.
I attempt to go to bed between 9:00-10:00pm. I normally wake at 4:15am and at the office by 8:15 (1 Hour Commute) I normally can hold this schedule for 4 day’s then I need to sleep in which is only 5:30.
If kids wake me, which I’d say I’m woken 5 out of 7 nights I may need to adjust my schedule. It’s difficult and I’m starting to think the Ironman thing just takes too much time. Right now the wife is supportive for two IM. This October and next July. After that I maybe concentrating on HIM…
my daughter’s 10 and I still get her to bed at 8:30. She needs 10-12 hours sleep. We go to bed at 930 and get up at 630. I need 8-9 hrs of sleep when training. We have a few friends who let their kids stay up late and then wonder why they’re such little monsters during the day. I’ve done the morning workout thing a few times. I prefer to get my share of chores done in the morning and workout in the evening.
I aim to be in bed by 2200 and up by 0600. However, I am writing this at 2311, so I guess that’s me offline soon! I sometimes aim for a lie-in which with my internal clock can be up to 0700 before getting up! Doh. 8 hours seems optimum for me.
Work from 1pm til 11pm, hope I’m in bed by 1am, up at 5:30 to be at the pool when it opens on swim days. Might take a nap after. On bike or run days I’m up at 8:00. It’s kind of a dream shift for training.
I’m usually asllep between 11:30 and 12:00, and awake shortly after 5:00. This works terribly for me, but I have trouble breaking the cycle. To add to the problem, I am a light sleeper, so I am often heavily fatigued. At 56, I should be doing much better, but it just doesn’t happen; never has. At least three work days a week I power nap, grabbing 10-15 minutes when my 5th graders are off to gym, art, computer, or Mohawk class. This takes the edge off the fatigue, but of course it is just a stop-gap measure. For a while I was taking E-Caps’ “R.E.M. Caps”, and I really think they improved the quality of my sleep, but I didn’t really think i could afford to continue using them; maybe I ought to re-think that position.
This is a good thread, greensneakers. Thanks for it.
I learned in heath class about birth control so I have no children, I sleep 8-9 hours and 10 on the weekends. Do all of my training in the evenings, from 4:00-9:00 and write Tom D’s phone # in all the rest areas I stop at when traveling to races.
Trying to get to bed earlier, managing to be in bed around 10-10:30, awake at 6 when my wife’s alarm goes off. Can’t get back to sleep after that. Finding myself always tired, so aiming to try and get some 9-9:30 nights over the next few weeks to try and catch up.
My wife sleeps late at the weekend, I just can’t, still awake by 6:30.
I’ve always been a “morning person”. Weekdays I’m in bed by 10pm and the alarm goes off at 4:30am. I get a 30 minute nap at lunchtime - every day.
Weekends I might sleep till 6am but still go to bed within an hour of my normal time. I usually get an hour to an hour and a half nap on the weekend days.
