Is this the right size bike for me? It’s a 54cm. I’ve had it for about 6 months and absolutely love it. The reason I am asking is that I have the opportunity to get a very good deal on a 2006 54cm limited edition P2 SL from my neighbor. If I’d be better off on something smaller, e.g., a 51 cm, then I won’t bother with my neighbor’s bike.
I like riding steep, so on my current set up the saddle is all the way forward on the rails and I have an adjustable 100 Ritchey stem that’s angled down a bit (not sure of the exact angle.) There’s about 15cm of drop from the top of the saddle to the aerobar pads.
Once the three kids go off to college in about 15 years, I’ll clear out the room and start from scratch. Until then, should I stick with the paint scheme and picture rail on the walls (it’s a 1920 bungalow).
Are you saying keep the bike, but don’t get my neighbor’s because the fit isn’t good? Or does the fit look o.k.?
Don’t get the neighbours bike because it won’t offer anything. A Seat tube cut out and horizontal drop out are not really worth whatever the transaction will end up costing (a few hundred after dual is sold I imagine). Your position looks pretty good but the P2SL has the same geometry so will not benefit in that respect. Think about where you can spend your money to get a real return.
Is that something like ten spacers you have above the handlebars? I think you could use a trim during the off season.
I suppose if you can watch tv like that for an hour, then you have no neck problems during races. Of course, you may need glasses pretty soon for the eyeball abuse.
Looks fine, but you really need a professional to measure everything. Have you tried calling around your area for a good bike shop that does pro fits? Google all bike shops in your area and invest the time in a drive to get fitted if you can.
If you live in the atlanta area or nearby…go to ALL3 sports in Atlanta and get fitted! I was fitted by an ironman that took 30-45 minutes making sure that I got the best fit.
If you’ve got the stem buried at the bottom of the stack AND angled down, you MIGHT get a better fit on the smaller frame IF it doesn’t shorten up the TT/stem combo (or can be compensated for) without getting too much weight on the front wheel. But you position looks pretty good as is.
I never cut the steering tube and I replaced the 30mm conular spacer with a 8mm spacer, so there’s 60-something mm of spacers above the stem. I agree that I could stand to cut the steering tube down because it’s damn near like a spear right now. I’m lucky that I haven’t been impaled on it.
Actually, my trainer normally isn’t that close to the tv, but it was displaced by the Christmas tree, so I was forced to move it out to the garage. The garage is a complete disaster (the living room is only a partial disaster), so I brought it back in and put it in front on the tv for photo purposes only.
