What the Hell - Fire Away!

Is this the right size bike for me? It’s a 54cm. I’ve had it for about 6 months and absolutely love it. The reason I am asking is that I have the opportunity to get a very good deal on a 2006 54cm limited edition P2 SL from my neighbor. If I’d be better off on something smaller, e.g., a 51 cm, then I won’t bother with my neighbor’s bike.

I like riding steep, so on my current set up the saddle is all the way forward on the rails and I have an adjustable 100 Ritchey stem that’s angled down a bit (not sure of the exact angle.) There’s about 15cm of drop from the top of the saddle to the aerobar pads.

Your seat position is way too close to the TV! Hell you might as well change channels from your bike.

Change everything in the picture except the bike and the walls.

Mike, you need a larger TV. :o)

I said I’d never do this, but that’s a good fit. Go for it.

DISCLAIMER: I think phits (fits by photo) are silly. But they can be useful pedagogic exercises. And very entertaining.

ANOTHER DISCLAIMER: I make my living partially through bike fitting, but that’s not why I think phits are silly.

What are the weeds over the window?..why are you levelors bent up like you peek out looking for the law?

good fit on the bike…

Once the three kids go off to college in about 15 years, I’ll clear out the room and start from scratch. Until then, should I stick with the paint scheme and picture rail on the walls (it’s a 1920 bungalow).

Are you saying keep the bike, but don’t get my neighbor’s because the fit isn’t good? Or does the fit look o.k.?

By the way, I did the walls and the fit myself.

Is it just the foreshortened image or are you trapped in your elf neighbors’ living room. Compared to that door you look to be about nine feet tall.

Fit looks good; how’s the neck?

Dave,

I keep telling my wife the same thing, but she insists on keeping the armoire and not much fits in it. So, for now I’ll just have to live with a 27".

Don’t get the neighbours bike because it won’t offer anything. A Seat tube cut out and horizontal drop out are not really worth whatever the transaction will end up costing (a few hundred after dual is sold I imagine). Your position looks pretty good but the P2SL has the same geometry so will not benefit in that respect. Think about where you can spend your money to get a real return.

I don’t even know what those are above window; they were my wife’s idea. As for the blinds, on the advice of counsel, I will remain silent.

Is that something like ten spacers you have above the handlebars? I think you could use a trim during the off season.

I suppose if you can watch tv like that for an hour, then you have no neck problems during races. Of course, you may need glasses pretty soon for the eyeball abuse.

Oh yeah, the fit looks pretty good also.

Looks fine, but you really need a professional to measure everything. Have you tried calling around your area for a good bike shop that does pro fits? Google all bike shops in your area and invest the time in a drive to get fitted if you can.

If you live in the atlanta area or nearby…go to ALL3 sports in Atlanta and get fitted! I was fitted by an ironman that took 30-45 minutes making sure that I got the best fit.

ALL 3sports rocks!!

The fit looks good. The trainer is way to close to the couch. Don’t you spray little rubber tire pieces on the couch?

If you’ve got the stem buried at the bottom of the stack AND angled down, you MIGHT get a better fit on the smaller frame IF it doesn’t shorten up the TT/stem combo (or can be compensated for) without getting too much weight on the front wheel. But you position looks pretty good as is.

“Is that something like ten spacers you have above the handlebars?”

If you fall you must might impale yourself. That looks worse than mine, and mine is BAD.

I don’t have my protractor with me so I can’t comment on angles.

But, your neck is lower than the rest of your spine. Do you feel you really need to be that low?

Neck’s fine. Nope, no elfs in the neighborhood, so I’ll go with the foreshortened image option.

I never cut the steering tube and I replaced the 30mm conular spacer with a 8mm spacer, so there’s 60-something mm of spacers above the stem. I agree that I could stand to cut the steering tube down because it’s damn near like a spear right now. I’m lucky that I haven’t been impaled on it.

Actually, my trainer normally isn’t that close to the tv, but it was displaced by the Christmas tree, so I was forced to move it out to the garage. The garage is a complete disaster (the living room is only a partial disaster), so I brought it back in and put it in front on the tv for photo purposes only.
