What size handlebars?

Realize this is a bit of an ambiguous question, but I have a 58 cm bike and the stock handlebars are 44 cm. Just got back from a long ride and arms were feeling a little stretched out laterally -although, this could just be the discomfort of never having ridden that far before.

Question is: What’s a good rule of thumb or way to figure out if your handlebars are too long or short? I think the stem length is allright - I have a good bend in my arms. I’m 6 ft with 29 inch arms.

If you’re about my height, how wide are your bars?

P.S. this is on a road bike, not sure if that matters.

In general, you’d go by the width of your shoulders at the bony protuberance. Bars would be the same width.
