What rim should I lace my 32 hole powertap hub to?

The stock velocity(?) rim the hub came with is pretty much trashed. I think it’s the velocity a23. Had a hard time keeping it true from the get-go. Probably got less than ~10k miles out of it.

What rim should I lace hub to? Prefer a 30ish mm deep aluminum hoop that I can tape my wheelcover to for races. Planning to trim down my wheelcover, which I currently have to use the little bolts for (current rim is too shallow for taping, ~19ish mm).

If it has to be 30mm, that limits your alloy options. The HED Belgium is very good, but only 24mm, not 30mm. The Kinlin XC279 is also very good, but still only 28mm deep.

I’ve heard great things about the HED belgium too, & that’s what I am going to lace mine too for the same reasons as you. Now, if I can just find the time to part with my powertap!

Thanks for the suggestions - It doesn’t have to necessarily be 30, but it’s just easier to tape the wheelcover to a bigger surface, obviously. My rim now is 19 and taping isn’t really an option.

Since we’re spending your money, I vote for a 16-hole Enve 65 carbon clincher: http://fairwheelbikes.com/enve-65-carbon-clincher-rim-p-1203.html

DT-Swiss RR585 is a pretty good choice. I’m building 2 right now. It’s bomb-proof and 30mm.

I used the xc279w last year 2x NDS, 1x (heads in, use brass washers) DS on a the same hub. ~110 kgf DS and it’s a rock.

I’d go with the Kinlin then - 28mm is still a good surface to tape to, and it’s high quality and definitely the right price.

DT Swiss RR440 is a nice rim for your PT hub and can be used with a disc cover for race day. If you want something closer to the 30mm depth the RR585 from DT Swiss will do the trick. We can cut you a new cover at a deep discount if you are going with a shallower rim. I wouldn’t recommend reusing your old spokes for the rebuild.

Lots of good suggestions. I’ll add Mavic Open Pro. Most good bike shops can build these for you if you don’t want to or can’t do it yourself. I have a set of these with a PT and have beat the crap out of them and they still spin totally true.

Well as it came with Velocity, it’s a training wheel (and 32 hole was another give away

Therefore, I’d suggest a Mavic Open Pro 32 hole. It’s a bombproof training rim.

That’s what I did. Here are some pictures:

The wheel cover is in the cardboard box seen in the pictures, but I haven’t attempted to install it yet. I’ll post if there are any issues.

Yeah. I’m a set it and forget it type of person. Build to an open pro And never touch it until the hub quits

I really don’t understand the Open Pro. The quality has gone down, it’s old design, it’s markedly inferior to new designs, and it has nowhere near enough area to tape a cover to.

Wow,

I’ve only ever heard great things about the open pro. It’s a training rim for sure, but in my experience and in talking with a couple of wheel builders, it’s ideal for the purpose. I’ve been riding Open Pro rims for my commuter bikes for almost 20 years now and they last several years of summer and winter riding. Generally the front rim will last 2-3 years and the rear a little longer. I ride through very wet, very gritty winters near the sea, here in New Zealand. My route is hilly-ish with lots of braking for hills, turns and traffic lights. I get about 10,000km per year on my commuter bike. I’ve had to replace 1 rim before it wore out, because I tripped, fell and put my knee on the rim and bent it. I’m about to replace a second rim before wearing out, because I hit a 2x4 at speed and bent one sidewall slightly. I managed to gently tap it straight and flat enough to use, but it’s worn out faster than the rest of the rim because there is an oh-so-tiny bulge in it. Other than that, they’ve been bombproof, stayed straight (even the one I replaced myself) and great value for money as well.

Why not a 30 mm Velocity?
That is what I have for my training wheels, built up by wheelbuilder,
4th season with it no issues.

Yeah I know a lot of people swear by them, but I trashed two of them back in my pre powertap days. Had much better luck with the old cxp 30’s.

In this case though, since I wanna tape a wheelcover to it, the open pro is too shallow anyway.

Except, as he stated, this will be his race wheel when he attaches a wheel cover.

Doesn’t wheel builder make a cover for that exact setup?

Just double checked their site… and they do…
