What positions do Democrats need to change in order to win in the future?

Where I live, In-N-Out is paying $23 per hour for new employees with no experience.

Stats can be manipulated or cherry picked. And our eyes both lie and allow us to see only what we want to see; and we are mostly likely not even aware of the bias. It may be human nature and it might have been valuable in an evolutionary sense in a different era, but it’s profoundly dangerous now. It’s definitely a both sides problem, but not equally so.

Not super actionable and arguably a pretty bad

First, they metric they are touting as a “better” measure does not appear to better in any real way. Their metric basically mirrors the official unemployment rate. So their own measure was showing a near record low “unemployment” during 2024. Yet the polls showed people being less happy with the economy when this metric was low compared to when it was even higher. So it clearly doesn’t correlate at all with how people feel about the economy or experience the economy as the article seems to imply.

Second, you can’t claim that democrats beleive statistics and republicans believe their eyes. That is just not supported by the data at all!

This data exists and the author either ignores it or did not look for it. The data just totally undermines the authors claim here. Look at how Republicans feeling on the economy jsut plummets when Biden is elected. Their own metric shows unemployment getting better, but republicans don’t say the economy is getting better. How is that their using their eyes? According to the author, republicans would have been rating the economy in 2024 as they did in 2019, but they clearly don’t.

The easiest and clearest explanation to explain the phenomenon is not this metric created by the author it is the following two points:

A) this issue is partisan and with Republicans especially. The reasons republicans said the economy was bad was because a democrat was president.
B) people fucking hate inflation. Even if your income goes up more than inflation, you think something is wrong. Because of emotions, you believe more income is something you earn (even though it also due to inflation), but higher prices a punishment (even if it did lead to a higher income).

I didn’t read the methodology but based on the article easily 25% of my neighborhood is unemployed or underemployed. But but but Windy…settle child…Stay at home moms, early retirees, putzing recent college grad (just one), parents that take non-FTE jobs to be there for their kids. Those are all by choice in a nice neighborhood but all of the first three would be excluded from standard numbers as not in the workforce.

Shouldn’t at least some of them be excluded?

Should someone that was successful and able to retire early be counted as unemployed? If all of sudden a huge windfall came to a bunch of people and they left the workforce, you would want the unemployment rate to increase?

Same with single mothers. If they go to work because their household finances require it, the unemployment number should go down.

The 23 % is based on adding people that make less than $25,000 so qualifies the number as “functionally” unemployed. I do agree with the author that having 1/4 un or underemployed is not a great place to be.

I don’t know about US statistics, but in Canada housewives do not count as unemployed as they are not actively looking for work. Given that our unemployment rates are similar and we share a ton of social similarities, I would expect the US unemployment rate to exclude housewives.

Happy Birthday Henry Rollins

From 2019, but it’s still true (true again)

What about househusbands?

$25,000 is functionally unemployed now? Boy I’m starting to feel old…LOL

you’re response is hogwash.

Democrats immigration bill was more about additional pork than immigration.

The public has spoken on how they feel about transgender issues, etc. that fight is over. In addition, nobody really cares what people do on their own time…just don’t push the boundaries (like allowing biological males to compete in sports against biological women)…and stop trying to redefine what a woman is.

“Dems need to find messaging that works” is code for Dems need to figure out a way to lie to people to push through their crappy ideas.

Sabrina, this is a lie. They do not value anything, or anyone that doesn’t walk lock step with their principles. In fact, they do not realize it is THEY who are in a cult. It is THEY who have been gaslit by a left wing media.

The biggest travesy of all is this: Within a thread dedicated to figuring out how to win the next presidential election, the elephant in the room is ignored…which you (Sabrina) touched on. A complete refusal to accept that perhaps we (democrats) overplayed our hand, and the public rejected us. The public does not being called “deplorables” or “naziis”. The loss of the white house is less about a bad candidate, and more about democrats losing the war of ideas.

You cannot help those who refuse to be helped.

22% of the public has spoken.

If you didn’t have such a long history here, I would assume you were an AI talking point bot.

Correct. As we’ve seen from Trump, lying to the people is a winning strategy. Dems have been hesitant to embrace it but it’s time to take the gloves off. Better ideas are important, but secondary.

I only the Dems had thought to promise to lower grocery prices on day one or end the Ukraine war with a phone call. They are such losers.

They have to stand for something, globally and locally. Right now they stand for nothing. Too much spite, bicketing, pettiness…

They lost to the party that changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico. You could argue thay aren’t petty enough.

You mean, like the Republicans have done?

Has someone eaten your pet yet?

What has Trump done to stop this? As soon as he won the election he went back to ignoring it.

Here is Pete Buttigieg’s take on the recent DNC leadership vote.
