I am a Sprint customer, but could cancel anytime without penalty. I can also ad a line to my wife’s phone account with ATT for $10.00 plus whatever minutes I need.
I’ve used Treo 600’s and 650’s for the last five years or so. My 650 is dying and I want something smaller, that still allows very easy input of appointments, contacts, and memos. I would also like something that is proven to be durable, and not expensive like an Iphone.
Is anyone using a Blackberry Pearl with good results?
I am in the same boat with a 2+ year old 650. I can’t remember the model, but someone told me about a kick-ass Nokia out that is super-functional. Heard good things about the Pearl also, but I would not have a connection to a bb server. I will be watching this thread.
I love my BB Pearl. However, I’m a girl and I don’t have man hands, so the compact keys are not a problem for me. I mostly use it for phone and email. Don’t enter many appointments, I use the memo pad for shopping lists and that type of stuff.
I’d go the Blackberry route. But, having said that, I’m looking for a replacement for my current Blackberry and the main criteria is that it has to be able to function as a tethered modem for a Mac laptop. Anyone know of anything that will do this and also give me all the Blackberry functionality?
I use a Samsung Blackjack and am a former Black Berry user. Pretty much all the same functionality but uses Windows Mobile as a platform.
For the tethered modem capability I really like it. In a 3G area I have connected at 270Kbs and have been able to work quite easily. Simply plug into lap top, connect, and I’m working. Much easier than paying in the airport for a few minutes connection or at a customers where I cannot connect at all.
I’m aware that you don’t want the expense of the iPhone but it blows away the Treos. I’ve had the 600 ad 650 and I just love the iPhone. It was well worth the price.
Would you be comfortable carrying the Iphone around with you all the time? I stuff my Treo in my Bento box and my jersey on some training rides, and take it from car to car, so it gets quite a bit of handling. I need another phone that is tough. The Treo has gotten wet twice in the last six months, and twice I have baked it in an oven to restore it’s functionality. This time it got a little too brown on top and it is not working perfectly :0/
Yes I would feel comfortable carrying it around on my bike and you could get a number of different enclosures to protect it. For the record, I have dropped my iPhone a few times and no problems yet (fingers crossed and AppleCare covered). I probably wouldn’t bake my phone though ;-).
I played with the Iphone, and it is a beautiful toy, but not exactly what I need so I grabbed a Treo 680 on sale. Not so glamorous, but more functionality that I need at a lower cost. Thanks for the input folks!
I have a Pearl. I have used every single Blackberry model to date and I like the Pearl the best. I will admit it is difficult to type on, but I don’t view that as a disadvantage. It helps me keep work at work. I only respond to the messages that I need to respond to.
The media player has been nice. I added 1GB of flash memory and it now doubles as my MP3 player for commuting.
The camera is OK, it’s come in handy a few times.
The best thing about it is the size as far as I’m concerned. I don’t have to strap the thing to my waist. I can carry it in my pocket with no problems.
I have had Cingular(now ATT) for years with no problems. Anytime I used the Edge network with my Razr it was SLOOOW, but with the iPhone and with the recently upgraded Edge network it works great. Plus, you can hook into any local WiFi so downloading/sending emails, using the internet, downloading YouTube vids is no problem.
Thanks for the feedback. I am on the Central Coast of California so the rural nature of the area may have some impact, but I am glad to hear some positive comments. Most of the reviews I have read have not been that great.
