Think a unplanned for srint could be good for training.
Just eat something “lite” before you run - Granola bar, etc.
Wait to eat your lunch until you are done.
2 words:
flaxseed scones
just ask chip
.
Chorizo and potato burger w/ egg.
Stout.
Good lunch. No need to run and taste it again. ![]()

Cereal and milk does it to me every time.
I’ve had a few close calls and have been lucky enough to find a McD’s or a porta-john on my usual road routes! I dread that feeling coming on! Lately though, I try not to eat at least 2 hours before any runs. It helps with the GI distress, but as of recent I’ve had issues with terrible heart burn when running after dinner. I’ve found Italian dressing is one of the worst for causing heart burn.
Last night on our weekly night trail run I had one of the worst episodes of heart burn. I had vegetable stir-fry with some spicy oriental sauce well over 2 hours before runnning. I thought that I’d be OK… but was I ever wrong. I can see how people mistake bad heart burn for a heart attack. I was having the most intense chest discomfort & burning/stabbing pains. I actually stopped at a mini-mart on the way home and bought a zantac & a bottle of mylanta! My buddy was laughing at me… I guess I am not getting any younger!
Thank you for sharing.
I used to go to Whole Foods and buy 2 of their fresh oatmeal cookies and eat them just before a run - for extra energy. One day, they were out of my usual, but had a similar looking cookie, although it was prepackaged, and said “High Fiber”. Oh well.
I almost made it 5 miles, and had just passed the turn off to go to the public restrooms by the tennis courts in Central Park when it hit me. I stopped running immediately, as soon as I realized it wasn’t just gas, and tried to walk, stiff-legged and tight-assed the couple hundred yards or so, back to the johns; I must have looked like an odd imitation of a robot, but I didn’t care.
Sorry, no way. I was THAT close. People for miles around must have wondered what the explosion was. I felt bad for whomever needed to enter that restroom for the remainder of the weekend. ![]()
X2 on the flaxseed, VO2Max; that was the magic ingredient.
Egg Salad!
Japanese food, I don’t recall what I ate but went running two hours later and it hit me hard about 4 miles from the house. Luckily enough, or so I thought, there is a Wendy’s two miles from the house. Unfortunately I could only make it another 1 mile and 5200 feet and ye ol’ sphincter let go in the parking lot whilst dashing madly to the door.
Ducked behind the Wendy’s and commenced to cleaning up very much like Robin Williams in the Fisher King. I think my wife has never laughed harder than when I refused to come in the house and just yelled at her to bring me a garbage bag, a big one.
ive had to stop eating peanut butter before running. thats bad new.
If you want to extend the window to 24 hours, chipotle and basically any chinese food.
You need Chipotlaway
.
Half a bottle of whiskey and Qdoba.
weak stomach! i guess you werent a swimmer growing up, me and my friends used to eat the most fatty health unconscious garbage before swim work outs b/c we couldnt put on the calories (coincided with puberty) and wouldnt throw up.
i now have an iron gut :). your stomach can be trained.
That’s awesome. And so true. Donuts are a swimmers best friend. Powdered minis on the way to morning weights, haul ass to the donut shop between the gym and the pool in between. A few more on the way home, and naptime. Oh to be young again. If I tried that today I’d probably weigh 400 pounds and live another year. Maybe.
I can still eat damn near anything, anytime, with few tragic repercussions.
Add to this: any Mexican food. Farty Marty for sure!
My only bad experience was from a BIG feed of curry the night before a fast run.
Ran 7km the next morning and the last 2 km were torture. Thought I was going to loose it right there on the track, but the sphincter somehow held tight.
JUST made it to the service /gas station toilet where we parked the cars. Absolutely destroyed the place. Thank God there was no one waiting to use it when I came out.
Biking or swimming I can eat about anything.
With running anything high fat(natural peanut/almond butter) will be a quick flow-through process with no bottlenecks.
I had my gal bladder removed and I don’t know if that is contributory, but fat is the antithesis of running for me.
Chef Boyardi Ravioli, don’t eat it fpr at least 2 days before a run.
a large chocolate milk followed by a large diet coke…
my hubby would add a couple pounds of crawfish. I knew better.
