What libations contain the least amount of sugar and which do you indulge in?

As a single guy I try to maintain a social life and train hard which means happy hours and going out on certain nights of the week and enjoying time spent with friends and dates. So when im out I always wonder, whats the best alcoholic drink to have if any or one that has the least amount of sugar??? Is it wine, hard liquor or beer, I have a fondness for mojitos but there is waaaaaaay too much sugar in them and I usually feel it if I ride the next day, ha.

.

1 part Maker’s Mark whisky, 2 parts diet coke. I think I’ll have one now.

Mojitos are part of my “night before a marathon” carbo loading ritual… not that I’d recommend that to anyone else.

Carbs in alcoholic beverages (Distilled alcohol has no carbs apparently):

Keep in mind that no-carbs does not mean that there are no calories in alcohol.

im diabetic and diff beers can have vastly diff effects on your blood sugar. try out diet drinks and spirits

It usually the mixer that kills your diet plan…unless you can use water.

I don’t drink much at all anymore, but my drink is stoly and a little cranberrie juice

Dude it’s not the sugar in the mojitos that you feel the next day, it’s the dehydration from the alcohol.

My advice to you is to drink Guiness… contrary to popular belief it is actually one of the lighter beers out there with 125 calories per 12 ounces. That’s less than skim milk. For comarison, Sam Adams has 180 calories per 12 ounces.

What??? I was always told that a pint of Guiness had more calories than a loaf of bread. Do you have a source for this info?

From http://www.briansbelly.com/beerbelly/guinness.shtml:

" Guinness is often thought of as a high calorie beer but the official word from Guinness is that it is less than 11 calories per ounce. A 12oz serving has 125 calories, 9.8 grams of carbs and it’s alcoholic content is 4.2%. For comparison, 12 ounces of Budweiser is 150 calories and 11 grams carbs, 12 ounces of Heineken is 150 calories and 12.2 grams of carbs, 12 ounces of Corona Extra is 148 calories and 14.1 grams of carbs, and SURPRISE… a Sam Adams Light has 126 calories and 10.9 grams of carbs. Of course, I don’t know anyone who only drinks 12 ounces of Guinness (or any beer for that matter) so your mileage will vary."

As for low calorie drinks, vodka and cranberry have already been mentioned. Vodka and soda (little lemon) have even less calories.

Thanks for that info, I was just about to consult Google for sources.

And caleb – a loaf of bread??? Seriously now, you believed that?

you know, i pretty much decided that wasn’t going to worry too much about that kind of stuff so long as i practiced moderation, though I dont go out as often as that. I pretty much stick to Guiness, Bass or Harpoon (sponser my old team) when I am out with ‘the guys’, wine with dinner and at home.

Yeah, Guinness is actually almost a light beer in calories, it just feels like it isn’t. I actually use Guinness as a post-workout drink because it is high in lots of nice anti-oxidants and other useful vitamins…plus it tastes awesome. It’s a good muscle relaxant…yeah, yeah that’s the ticket!

But on the low-sugar side of things, all non-sweetened 80 proof alchohol beverages contain the same amount of calories (as alchohol) = 98. Scotch, clear rum, vodka, etc are all basically non-sweetened and therefore are close to the “standard” number, but many other liquors (Bailey’s, Cognacs (from added caramel), etc) have higher sugar content and also higher calorie counts.

I don’t follow. Is that per ounce? Seems quite high.

A wonderful little chart for all those beer drinkers… The winner is cooper and sons stout at 205 calories and 7% alc.

I’m a long time Guiness drinker and didn’t even realize that. But as you mention, it doesn’t feel light. Guess there is a distinction between high calories and a full bodied taste.

Think I’ll have a Guiness or two tonight. You guys have put me in the mood.

I think it is the heavy carbonation in Guiness or other CO2 infused beers (boddington’s, etc) that make them feel heavy. Most people are suprised to learn that Guiness has the same amount of alcohol as Bud light. I have been told that this isn’t the case in Ireland.

Great stuff. Guiness for sure this evening. If I can ever get out of this office.

This post sure had made me thirsty!!!

Guinness is good because it is heavy – then you do not drink to much!!

I do like Makers Mark – On Ice – smooth!! But that is a bad drink for training.

I don’t know where you’ve been buying your guinness, but you should stop!

Guinness has way more alcohol than Bud light, even in it’s pallid U.S. version

That’s for a standard 1.5 ounce “shot.” Ever wonder why the minimum calories for a “ultra-light” beer never seem to get much below 100? Because alchohol is the primary source of calories in the stuff. 1.5oz at 40% is 0.6oz of alchohol, roughly 98 calories. 12oz at 5% is also about 0.6oz of alchohol, so the minimum calorie count is also about 98, plus whatever sugars or malts are left from brewing. This is why ultra-light beers and light beers all taste like water. As you can see from Guinness, it takes about 20-30 calories of flavory stuff to make a good beer. Don’t ask me how Sam Adams ends up in the 200 calorie range.

And on how Guinness “feels” heavy…I haven’t a clue. I don’t think it’s the carbonation, because all heavily carbonated drinks make me burp like mad…and Guinness doesn’t. I guess I just need to taste some more and try to figure it out!
