I’m not sure if I have shin splints or compartment syndrome or something that will just go away on its own: when I run I have some sharp pain in my lower right shin area, knind of on the inside in a meaty / tendon like area. It goes away as I get warmed up and some times doesn’t occur at all. Yesterday I did a 15 mile run and I only noticed it after I stopped and began walking. It is most bothersome during hard efforts. Thursday night my leg actually fell asleep during a 5K and it has fallen asleep during tempo runs as well. Shortly after I stop the hard effort the leg “normalizes.” I was at my general doc’s on Friday and she measured the area where the pain seems to be emanating and it is actually slightly swollen - - 1/4 inch bigger than the other leg. Given that I have a parent who suffered a DVT we thought maybe I should get a doppler done but part of me thinks this might be a waste of time and that it is something entirely different. Any ideas?
likely need to visit someone who can measure your compartment pressure first (The little Stryker pressure testor is ridiculously expensive) - doesn’t matter who that it. A good sports med clinic would be your best initial bet if you are near a major metro area. Next most likely would be an orthopedic surgeon, next a podiatrist (again, most won’t have this capability though).
I actually have an orthopedic surgeon that I’ve seen in the past - - guess I’ll be giving him a call again! Thanks!
