I know they are two totally different races, but I would still like to know what your average paces look like for each run.
Feb marathon followed by an April HIM both at 7:15 and both in NOLA.
-edit—
Just reread the title. My first 140.6 is in 2 weeks, so no help. Sorry.
I ran a 8:30/mile pace at the Texas 70.3. I ran a 10:45/mile pace at Ironman Texas about six weeks later.
The difference: twice as long (duh) and about 15 degrees warmer. I also became very apathetic on the IMTX run once I backed off my goal run pace. The heat had my HR jacked about 10% higher than I wanted so I had to back off and slow down from the 9:40/mile pace I ran for the first 10K. I could have probably kept that 9:40-ish pace given the same conditions at Galveston six weeks earlier.
I’ve done several HIM’s and have always been around 7:00-7:20/mile depending on the course/weather. I did IMLOU this year and avg’d 8:12/mile.
70.3 runs usually in 7 - 7:15/mile pace. Last two 140.6 runs in 8:39/mile and 10:38/mile.
Totally different races
About 6:45 for halfs lately and a hair under 8 minutes for LP this year. I think a minute delta would be great. Very different races.
A little less than a minute per mile difference between the two paces for me
.
Best IM Run = 7:00 min/mile
Best 1/2 IM run = 6:00 min/mile
.

Perhaps this might be useful. Thank Ale Martinez

The weird thing about that chart is that my open times do not match my triathlon times. My triathlon run times are much much better, relatively speaking. According to the chart I should be running my open half marathons 3 or 4 minutes faster than I do

Perhaps your training has actually been more successful than you realize;)
I know a few others that top the 80% for an Ironman but many more that fall on the other side.

It’s just that I would expect the stand alone running to be much better than the triathlon running, not the other way around. I’ve been a runner all my life. Perhaps I have been sandbagging it ![]()
My half open PR is 1:27:03 and my fastest half this season in an HIM was 1:26:40 or so. Granted the open half was early in the season and the HIM was late summer so I was for sure in better shape but I thought that was interesting. I now want to run an open half now that the season’s done to see what my time is now.

This may be to the situation that you and many triathletes seem to eschew racing 5K and 10K running races almost completely. Not sure why this is, because when you get the 5K time down, assuming great aerobic fitness, all the other race times will come down to.
Ah but that’s the part that makes it odd. I don’t avoid 5ks and 10ks. I’ve been racing short for 30 years. Hell, I still race on the track every winter. As I get kidded for repeating so often, I’m not really a triathlete. I’m a runner. I’ve only been doing triathlons as a summer-break sort of thing for 5 years now. But according to that chart, instead of the 1:14-1:15 that I seem to be able to do on my best half marathon, I should be in the 1:11 range, at least when you look at the run times I do in HIMs and IMs.
I had a hip injury when I did my HIM but I still was able to run it in 1:40 (7:40ish pace). During my IM run I was on pace for a 3:50 marathon at 1:54 (8:50ish pace) for the halfway mark but my quads were fried around mile 20. I ended up jogging/walking a 4:10. I even felt like I had back off and taken the first 18 miles easy so that I could run the entire race.
Maybe you need to push the bike more until your run times are slower :).
To the OP: About 1 minute. (7:30 to 8:30)

Joe,
I think you may be miss-reading the chart. Your 1:23:15 at Timberman matches quite nicely with your half marathon PR
of 1:14:56 if you assume your run at Timberman was done at ~90% FTP.
Hugh
Roughly about 1min different. Give or take 6:30/mile pace for 70.3 and 7:30/mile pace for 140.6
Currently, the gap for me is more like 1:25: 6:45 min/mi for the half (two HIM’s this year) and 8:10 for the full (CdA). Similar conditions for all three races. I’m hoping to fix that at IM Coz, but I’m not too hopeful since the humidity will be considerably higher. Actually, I’d probably be happy with 8:10.
