I don’t usually subscribe to the “monster training weekend” thing…most of my weekends are pretty tame and will consistently include a Sat long ride (maybe with a OW swim beforehand and/or short transition run…only in season though) then on Sun a med-length run with hill reps and 60min recovery spin. That’s my bread & butter weekend I’ll do maybe 42 weeks of the year. I find it rather amusing the folks who train themselves into the ground building huge fitness reserves, then fall apart on the big day by completely disregarding the most important, and woefully overlooked, factor for racing - executing to plan (nutrition, pacing, effort).
That said, in prep for IMNZ my biggest “weekend” went like this:
Fri: race pace course simulation - 115km ride (3:30) then 90min run (18km), 1000m recovery swim (2x500 build)
Sat: recovery day - 4.5km course swim, 45min trail run
Sun: easy course ride - 180km (5:45) then 10min easy run
This was 3 weekends out from the race, I napped well during the day and ate good recovery nutrition so I finished the last session still feeling strong, fresh and excited about the race ahead…it was good for a 10:09 debut IM. The more conservative training weekends described above were good for a 4:31 HIM in the middle of this IM build.
