What is your longest Run before HIM?

And when do you do it? 2 weeks out? 3 weeks out?

prior to Cali, I did 12.5 twelve days out and 13.5 miles 3 weeks out, both at 10 seconds under target race pace. For me that was 6:50’s, I wanted to run 7:00/mile at the race. Ended up running 1:33, 7:08’s.

prior to Baja, I ran a half marathon race 13 days before and 15.5 miles 4 weeks before. The longest runs outside of those were 8-10 miles.

Several 10-12 mile hilly runs at easy pace with no long runs in the two weeks before the race.

15-16K

Somewhere around 2.5 weeks out I think?

Didn’t do me a lick of good either!

2 hour 10 min scheduled 3 weeks to the race. Thats about 14-15 miles at my pace.

minimum of 15 miles, repeated for several weeks before.

I’m training for a BQ attempt at Chicago on Oct 7 and a 1/2 IM on September 9, so I have longs runs in the 12-18 mile range planned up until almost race day. I am racing a few 1/2 marathons before my 1/2 IM too. I’ve heard more is more, so I’m seeing if it works. Bob

Thanks everyone. I just did 2 1/2 hours 17 miles about 20 days out. Sounds like I need to do something around 8-10 miles next week and then call it good.

I ran a few hilly 17 milers and a whole bunch of 15 milers, also hilly. Some of those were as part of a brick (1 hr ride/2 hour run.). I was putting in close to 40 miles per week running. My last 15 mile run was just under 3 weeks out.

I ended up running a 1:35 at Musselman this year and felt very strong on the run.

I’ve done one 18 mile run 2 1/2 to 3 weeks before each of the HIM’s I’ve done. It generally works well for me.

Okay - good to know I didn’t go too long the other day. Coach was a little miffed that I pushed the run out longer. I was feeling good and was enjoying the intense heat/humidity + all the smoke from the forest fires.

~16 miles was my longest of my long runs when I was just training for 1/2 Irons. I was doing 10-15 long runs every week anyway though so there wasn’t any real build up for that distance.

Sounds about right, based on my own experience. I did a couple 15-16 mile runs, the last being 2.5 weeks out from Musselman The runs including several intervals of 10 ’ at IM pace followed immediately by 5’ at HIM pace, then a short rest. In the two weeks before the race I rode long but the only sort of long run was 11 days out and only about 10 miles. Ended up having a PR run (1:31) which beat my previous pr a month earlier at Eagleman by 2.5 minutes on a tougher course. I think its ok to go a little long as just as long as you have built up to that distance slowly so it doesn’t cause big receovery issues and you give you yourself enough time to be fresh for the race, which is also very individual. For me that means very little running race week.

My Half IM PR is 5:08.
I do a 15-miler 10 days out from the race date. That’s my longest training run for HIM. I do 2 or 3 runs of 12-13 miles in the weeks before that.
