What is this chain ring?

Bobby Julich’s ride from last weekends US TT?

Ah, Old is new again…

My first bike that I used for tris, about a million years ago (15 actually) had “bio-pace” chainrings. Similar to the Julich setup, but not quite as radical. Strange how they went out of favour because everyone laughed at them.

I didn’t know any different, and didn’t have anything to compare them to, but I will blame my really slow bike splits on them

everything that i’ve read about the new designs of non-circular rings mentions that bio-pace was a good idea with poor execution.

I too had biopace, didn’t really notice much of a difference, but love my q-rings.

It would be interesting to do a test, one after the other, of a bio-pace or similar chainring, vs a circular chainring, on the spinscan setting of a computrainer, to see the differnce with those little coloured graphs for each leg. I think in theory, a bio-pace is trying to get a flat line rather than a lumpy line, but I’m no expert, just an opinionated ST regular (LOL)

these are basically biopace rings rotated 90 degrees. Biopace was a good idea, but was lacking the current scientific knowledge and technology to get it right.

Several tests here:
