Interested in seeing what people think are risky things that will come up in our day to day or sporting lives
Next day
Next week
Next month
Next year
I type this while eating a bag of chips with soda. Cumulatively I may be just giving myself diabetes and blocked arteriies by doing this all year. It may be way worse than tomorrow’s bike commute in traffic. But not sure.
Day - eat pop tarts
Week - use offsite airport parking at O’Hare
Month - alpine slide in Andorra (back door brag)
Year - hopefully bike down a mountain in Colorado too fast for my wife
.
Next day - ride my bike on PCH
Next week - ride my bike on PCH
Next month - ride my bike on PCH
Next year - put off a physical because my health care is pretty much catastrophe care and I won’t want to spend the money to get it done.
Year: run the full racing season in spec miata. Or drive to/from work 200 times?
The risks of any of my sporting activities are far outweighed by driving with all these other idiots 10 hours a week. I had to execute two full-on emergency stops from 80mph to 20mph today just driving home, because people proceeded into the road in front of me instead of waiting for the mile of empty road behind me. In the second case I had to evade into ditch.
Today: take insulin and go to bed. Hope I don’t take to much
Next week: snorkel alone in Maui and take insulin before bed
Next month: backpack solo and take insulin before bed
Next year: stop taking insulin just kidding
Next day: commute by bike
Next week: fly single engine plane to San Juans including a 30 mile water crossing. Good thing we can both swim, and that I’m not afraid to request flight following.
Next month: drive on highway. I don’t drive much because I don’t need to. It has got to be one of the most dangerous activities most of us do on regular basis.
Next year: I don’t know maybe travel somewhere sketchy and take a wrong turn into a wrong neighborhood.
Similar to Tom Hampton. Anything I do that put’s me on a road.
Drive to swim workout, grocery, etc.
Ride the bike.
Drive to Florida and back.
So far the slow happening stuff, like what I eat or drink, I’ve been able to change rather quickly and those things turn out to be “accidents” that I avoid.
The most unsafe thing I will do is to “think that what I am doing is so important that I …”
It’s not just the activity, it’s the hurry and distraction that we put into it that usually causes trouble.
It really is quite astonishing that we don’t do more to make the roads safer. Or just get us off the roads.
Things I would be up for:
large increase in public transport
seperate transport of commercial good and people (transport truck collision will wipe you out)
significant reduction in speed limits
I thought the solution to the above was go for a ride and avoid the argument, but then you run the risk of ending up under a bus. Getting into the car to go to dairy Queen for ice cream ends up being instant death from a car or incremental death from sugar!
Next day: swim and windsurf by myself in the Atlantic
Next week: use a chainsaw to take down some large stumps
Next month: more swimming, more windsurfing
Next year: probably travel related but not sure where yet
.

Basically this !
Tonight- drive to a pub to have a pizza with a load of training buddies (double risk… drive AND pizza).
This weekend. Drive 4hrs to go OW swimming in some lakes. The drive is the risky part, not the swims.
Next month… drive to Scotland for a night time triathlon. It’s a long drive (for UK folks).
And drive home a couple of days later.
Tell the wife I need to train on her Birthday…it’s in my training plan, can’t help it…
The cumulative global bolts of ligihtening aggregated over the last month hitting all of us, is less risky than your proposition. I suggest you don’t tell her that you need to train on her birthday. Like we used to do in the Air Force when we had to break the rules to get shit done, you just go do it and then ask the commanding officer for forgiveness. As long as there is no flyby of the Commanding Officer’s daughter, then you’re OK…not sure what the familiar equivalent of that would be, but I guess it would be to not ride by her birthday party when she’s partying with her friends and wondering why her husband is no where in sight while you do your 6 hour ride and stop by the house after every 90 min loop for refueling (honestly this is not one from personal experience…even my wife would have the full on lightening bolt treatment…but if if I start the 3x90 min bike ride at 5 am and done by 9:30 am for birthday brunch it might fly).
