OK…so…I am one of those few people out there who has NEVER owned a cell or mobile phone.
Now, I am in the process of launching this web-based messaging service thing I wrote, and I may need a phone number people can reach me at. I don’t want to use my home phone# because that seems unprofessional. So I’m wondering what the cheapest possible solution is. I’m vaguely aware of pre-paid phones, but something tells me they really kill you on the per-minute rate. The only thing I would be using this for is this business venture, so if no one calls (which is very possible), I don’t want to be paying much. I’d also like to be able to text with it, if that is possible. Anyone have any great suggestions?
Forget about finding a cheap phone, you need to find a cheap plan. Most cell companies are giving away the phone when you sign up with them. I’ve looked into the pay-as-you-go models, but they were more expensive for me than the lowest monthly rate I could find. With the pay-as-you-go, there is still a minimum monthly amount because your minutes expire if you don’t use them. I pay $20/month for 200 minutes (I never even get close to that). With all the extras you have to pay for (system access fee, 911, taxes), it comes to about $32/month. This is in Canada, however, so it’s likely you can find a better plan in the US.
Texting is usually extra with basic plans. I pay $0.15 per message, but I almost never use it.
Ask your local friends about coverage. Some areas are covered much better by some companies. Pick service provider then just sign up for their cheapest plan. Texting quickly adds up and if lots of people start texting you then you will go over your limit and be hit with a big charge. If you want text messaging, just go for the unlimited.
There’s also this thing called email that may interest you too:) I hear lots of folks are using it these days for business.
