What is the acceptible number of spacers on a steerer?

Been following some of the bike posts and have noticed a huge difference in spacer stack heights…above and bellow the neck…

Asside from the odvious bad appearence what is the normal amount allowed???

What about the wack of spacers above a neck…would it not be better to just cut the steerer tube??? …thanks

no more than 1cm

I think manufacturers of forks with carbon steertubes recommend less than 20mm, but you might want to check with the mfg of your fork.

Well, I’d say 20mm is the absolute max below the stem. The less spacers below the stem the better. Simple mechanics, no arguing about it, period. Sometimes it’s good to have an additional 5mm spacer above the stem though, especially when combining certain stems and carbon steerers, to have full contact surface between stem and steerer. But that’s a different story

spacers above the stem cause no problems.

lots of spacers is a problem, but so are longish ‘positive-rise’ stems with no spacers.
