A post in another thread got me pondering the nature of friendship. Is a “Capital F” Friend one to whom you’d be more honest than you’d be with anyone else, and they to you? E.g., to the point of admitting your own failures and insecurities? And is anyone who falls outside that scope merely an acquaintance? If not, where’s the line between Friends and acquaintances?
I think the line is (1) missing them when they’re not around and looking forward to reuniting; and (2) the ability to talk honestly about personal stuff - none of the superficial, “Hey, how’s it going?” “I’m good!” stuff. Someone to whom you can respond with an honest “meh” when it’s true. Someone to whom you might speak honestly about your relationship with your spouse would be a Friend.

When I go to the old country and see friends I didn’t see for many many years and it takes us less than 5 minuets to get acquainted again, that’s friendship.
