What is a Zipp 1080 alloy Clincher worth? Can I just put a PT on the 1080? (I know Zipp says no)

Hello
Im using a coach in prep for IMLP 2012. He wants me to get a powermeter for training/racing. Im currently using a Zipp 808/1080 wheelset. Dont need computer, current bike comp is 2.4, also have a garmin to record data. Have been throwing a few things around. Would like to hear you guys opinions.

1)Sell wheelset and buy a less expensive wheelset with a Powertap. Looking at the Williams 85mm. $1799 wth powertap pro+ hub (dont need comp, using Garmin)

2)Sell just the rear wheel, Build up an 808 with a PT. (what should I sell it for? Very good cond, maybe 500 miles)

3)Buy a cheap alloy wheel with PT. Possibly add disc cover. But want watts during races as well, Not sure if this is way to go for Placid, would a disc be ok there.

thanks in advance for the replys

I’ve seen attempts at lacing a Powertap into a 1080. I see why Zipp does not recommend it.

Coming out of the flange the outside laced spokes have to make such a bend to get to the rim they need to, effectively, be bent. When the wheel is tensioned you almost always run out of threads becasue it starts to pull them back straight.

You can get the wheel together but it isn’t super durable and is really, really tough to get good spoke tension on. It simply isn’t a great combination.

I’d steer clear of it if possible.

thanks,
just searched “1080 powertap” and read a bunch of threads on that topic…gonna edit that opition out…

Ebay completed listings shows a 1080 rear clincher selling for $711 recently.

Give Rich or Vikki at Wheelbuilder a shout. At one point I was considering a 1080 with PT laced in…if anyone can do it…Wheelbuilder CAN.

cheers
