What if

an aero helmet had dimples like the zipp wheels. Would it be even more aero dynamic?

it would be even more expensive…

huge…

Only as you’re spinning ass-over-teakettle after having endo’ed in a pothole.

Dimples are for spinning objects - not stationary ones.

so put away the ball peen hammer psuambassador.

The pre-helmet-rules Lazer brand TT helmet thing had dimples. It made the riders look slightly dumber, but I don’t know if it made them faster.

LOL. No, I wasn’t about to go at it in my garage, I was just thinking.

Aren’t they for objects moving through air, rather than spinning. For example, some tri suits and running outfits have dimples. Personally, I have absolutely no idea, I was just wondering out loud.

if you think about it, the top of the wheel is going ~twice as fast forward than the bike and rider, so it is much more important for the rim to be dimpled than other components.

water is much more viscous than air; that might be why swim apparrel is dimpled.

Really a pretty good idea. We’ve got dimpled water bottles on the market, so I don’t see why your idea wouldn’t work. As for those who disparage your idea, I am reminded of the recent story of Tinley laughing at Allen after seeing him in an aero helmet - laughing that didn’t last too long…

As I understand it, the dimpleshelp stop flow separation because they cause turbulence.

Dimples are used on a golf ball because the dimples can be orientated any way. On an aero helmet, it should only be one way. All you’re doing essentially is turning the laminar flow turbulent so that it sticks to the surface for longer and therefore you don’t get flow separation resulting in pressure drag. You can turn the laminar flow turbulent with a groove

Where do I buy one?
