GAO report shows that most of the benchmarks are not being met. If this is true, what will Reps do?
I’m guessing it will go like this:
Blame the American media Blame the liberals/Democrats Blame the Iraqis Blame AQ Take no measure of responsibility themselves
Or, General Petraeus will issue a report that contradicts the GAO report, and hacks on either side will proclaim that they and they alone are correct about the situation, cherry-picking quotes here and there to justify their pre-set opinion.
I’m thinking that the Republicans will ask Baker to form a committe to study the issues, to recommend a strategy, and then one year from now completely disregard that entire report with one simple plan - more troops.
i chuckled but sadly I think this will be the result when the report comes out in the next few weeks. too bad they didn’t listen to those at the beginning who called for a “surge” of 300.000 boots on the ground to control the place. too bad we didnt have the Reagan era military to supply those numbers.

i think we already see what the new narrative is. surge smurge. that was the opening act. we’re going to be there for a generation or longer. we’re going to have permanent bases. every week another general says this, preparing us for this message next month when petraeus delivers it.
i’m not arguing a side. 70% of me says get the hell out. 30% says we royally fucked ourselves, and the iraqis, but we have no good choice but to stay in.
you know what my real concern is? a soviet-style bankruptcy. i think this is the key problem facing america, it’s the key national defense issue, if you will. we’re still spending on pork like it’s just been invented, and then there’s this war. we’ll hit $10 trillion in debt quite soon. how much debt will we have before other countries won’t buy any more of it? then what?
so i see this war in terms of how will we pay for it. we may not be around to see the islamist delivered dirty bomb. we may destroy ourselves trying to prevent it “over there.”
