What I talk about when I talk about running

…is a great little book by the Japanese novelist and running enthusiast Haruki Murakami. Highly recommended even though its a few years old.

Thinking about this while running today and taking it off on a tangent…I started noticing how much I think about while running. Especially compared to swimming or biking where I seem to concentrate almost solely on the task at hand. Running instead seems a fertile ground for my mind to roam freely: work, family, travel, bicycles I’d like to ride, races I’d like to do, will my training regime actually work…Thus, my light-hearted question to Slowtwitchers: what do you think about while running?

Maybe I’m too competitive or too goal-oriented for my own good, but I found that book too soft and mushy. (I love Murakami as a novelist, though.) Almost nothing on the joys of hammering and racing, and too much about the soft stuff that honestly, you can get from other activities like gardening.
