Does anyone know if he got injured, was sich or what else might have happened?
In addition to his running being off, he seemed to have a subpar day on the swim and the bike as well. That’s too bad. I was rooting for him to do really well.

Yeah, definitely too bad, I was rooting for him as well. I hope he just had an off day and there was nothing seriously wrong.

I never saw it, but there were reports of him limping out of T2 and walking certain sections of the run. It’s too bad… I’d have liked to see how close the race would have been had he been at his best.
Still, he finished well. Monica was there with him at the finish as well as cheering him on during the bike (saw her at Yellow Lake). I think he’s in good hands.

really too bad. I was hoping to see him at his peak. that’s got to really suck to put so much of your energy into one day and have something go wrong.
i was disappointed with his outcome. hope he is ok and returns to fulfill his dream of winning.
It is tough to put so much training in over many months and have an off day. Then on the other hand Rappstar jumps in on 2 days notice after apparently racing last weekend also, and has a huge day. It is a fickle business no matter how much experience you have.
I was under the impression that he had seriously stepped back from competitive triathlon.

still 9:03 is dam fast for a 38 year old. the aging/performance line is negative sloped linear right now for him, and wait till it gets exponential in the early-mid 50’s. he will definately be a hand full as a 40-44AG.
I know that he must be dispointed. As for the reasons - anything would be pure speculation at this point. I know that on paper he has the best palmeres going in. He told me that it was going to take a low 8:30’s or under to win and that he was capable and confidant of that. He was right on the time prediction as, Doe won in 8:33!
It was pretty competitive from 4th through to where Gordo finished. Had he even run 10 minutes faster or found 10 minutes somewhere, something he was capable of, he would have been right back in there
I agree with another poster that just from observation, he looked off all day. I hope that he can bounce back soon. he is a great guy and one of the great characters in the sport.
I agree with you about his character Steve. He is a great personality and I have always found him a superb individual to interact with. That being said, I think this was the “back down to earth” Gordo–the performances he put in took a monk-life existence to pull off, and on his blog he has said openly it’s not a sustainable lifestyle. Then of course we have Monica in the picture which I am sure doesn’t make 5:30 swim practice followed by a three hour nap near as much fun
You might see him level out as a 9 hr age grouper from this point on.
Well you may be right, but I don’t know if I’d blame it on marriage. Other successful IM pros are marrried. Seems more likely that it is because he is working – he was working for a while anyway, I have not read his blog lately. Married + full-time job + IM pro = tough or impossible.
.
I think that Gordo was as prepared it not more prepared for IMC yesterday then he has been for any past race.
The cards, whatever they may be, didn’t play in his favor - the true measure of Gordo will be in how he bounces back. His attitude after a tough day is what will define him, not his sucesses.
I saw him cross the finish line. he was 30 mintues slower then he wanted to, some would have shown dissapointement when crossing the line, some would be angry. Gordo showed class and raised both arms just as he did when he was second here…
I am curious about the story though . His first “disapointement” in 5 years or more. He always delivered untill now …
i think Gordo is smart enough to understand that sometimes it is there, sometimes it isn’t.
I agree. Sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not. For Doe, it was all there yesterday and he did a fantastic job (as did Jonnyo and Rapp)…
The level ignorance in some of these posts is astounding. If you follow Gordo at all you know that this was his race. Everything that he did over the past year had to do with this race. The reason why he took it easy in 2006 was because of IMC 2007. Every ounce of training and racing earlier in the year had everything to do with IMC 2007. He was more prepared than he has ever been for this race. This was it. This was his chance. This was his “all in.”
And what happened? Ironman. The most humbling event. You train your life away and it comes down to one day. One Chance. One go. To win it you have little to no margin for error. You have to nail everything.
It could have been a number of things. He looked bloated to me when he left T2. Maybe he wasn’t digesting his food intake. He looked like he was limping a bit too. Maybe that was because he wasn’t getting his nutrition. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe the pressure. Maybe his horoscope came in bad. Maybe his biorhythms were off (click here for your reading). Or Maybe he was paid off by a Vegas bookie.
I’m bummed for him. I sorta hope he holds his fitness and does another IM soon. Out of anyone I want so badly for him to win an IM.
I was pulling for him to do well also. I read his blog and have enjoyed his writing for some time (even when he was a regular on xtri.com). Everything he has written indicated that this was THE race for him.
I’m looking forward to reading his post-race analysis, I’m sure it will be a good read and insightful as always.
…not to take anything away from Rappstar and Jonnyo…I was following the ST thread on my blackberry all day, as i was out and about and not at my computer. So exciting for both of them! Breakthrough performances indeed.
Maybe someday soon we will throwing their names around on the 'Who will win Kona" thread.
I too hope he channels his fitness into another race pretty soon. Gordo’s generosity with information and his open honesty about his own training is truly refreshing and I wish him all the best. I was pretty bummed for him yesterday each time i checked in on the race progress and his classy finish shows he has everything in perspective.
“Winning” is fun but “meaning” derives from active participation in the daily process of success – a quote from Gordo’s blog earlier this summer. Although Gordo didn’t achieve his goal of winning IMC yesterday, his year-long quest was certainly full of meaning for him. I look forward to reading what he learned from yesterday’s IM.
you may want to reflect on your last paragraph in relation to your first.
I agree it is too bad for him
