What gearing are you riding for IM Lou? Frontand Back

I’m currently set up with 52/39 and either 11/23 or 12/25.

However I will have a 44 front available as well. Since there are no steep climbs, do you think if I run 52/44 and 11/23 I can minimise the shifting between the chain rings?

Thanks

I rode 80mi on it one day and 114 the next and never left my 53 front. I was riding 11-23 rear.

53/39 and a 12-25. There is nothing super steep, but lots of slow grinding and powering over some of the rollers for stronger riders. Slower, weaker riders will use the front 39 a bit, but I didn’t at all that I remember when I did 100 on 2 weeks ago.

For those that are wattage conscious there are three, maybe four, climbs that might need a 39. But could easily be done in a 53 if you’re not concerned about VI’s and IF’s.

I am going to run a 53/39 and a 11-23 in the back. When I rode the course I think there were onl 3-4 times I was in the little ring.

Big ring seems to be the choice for most responses. I’m planning on sticking to what has worked for me in the past: Spin to win. Lower gearing/higher cadence so I have some spring in my step for the run. Gearing will be 39/53F,12-27 (yes, I said a 27) on the back. Most of my training is on hills 0.5-1.0 miles in length with 6%-10% grades. I need this gearing to handle a ride doing 20+ of those climbs and have gas in the tank at the end. It’s already a long “training” day (it is a race, but I constantly have to focus on throttling back so I don’t overcook the legs, so I call it a training day), I don’t need to make it longer by wanting a lower gear while I’m out on the course. Regardless of temps, rain/sun, wind, wetsuit/no wetsuit, its going to be a great/fun day.

53/42 Front

27/12 Rear

Don’t really NEED the 27 but have it on there just in case…besides except for a few hills having that 27 will keep me in the 53 most of the day…

YMMV

I’m running 54 - 40 and 12-25.

50-34 and a 12-25. I’m a larger guy at 193.

Not taking any chances, going with a compact and a 12-27!

Wow. Are you sure? I think you are going to be unhappy with the overkill especially with a compact… I rode parts of the course myself while visitng relatives & agree with rroof post above. Most of the hills are really just rollers which do get tiring. I think you would like the grearing of the 12-25 over the 12-27. It’s just to big a jump 21-24-27.

Barb

Yeah…can’t say I disagree with you Barb. I put the compact on back in the spring and have ridden a lot of miles since then and I may have been over estimating the difficulty of the course. This is my first IM.

I will bring my 12-25 and after having a look at the course, will probably put it on instead of the 27.

Thanks
