I remember seeing that on TV many years ago and that Emilio DeSoto did very well in it (as is his custom to race well).
What ever happened to that race- it looked like a fine event from the TV coverage. I remember the Nixon’s had a home on San Clemente Island and it sounded like a picturesque destination.
Nixon lived IN San Clemente, not ON San Clemente Island, they’re different. San Clemente Island is owned by the navy, I have no idea if there ever was a tri there but it doesn’t sound likely.
I think you mean (Santa) Catalina island, another one of the channel islands. I’ve seen footage of Emilio and Monty going at it there. That race is still going.
Ben is right, San Clemente island is owned by the military, and you cannot set foot there. I have surfed there, but you have to stay in the water…You are thinking of Catalina island, and that is the race I used to put on beginning in 85… It has changed hands over the years, but Jack Caress puts it on now, and it is still the first weekend in Nov. Not the same race, a shorter version of my original race, and a lot more people. I think he gets around a 1000 or so folks, and it is 3 three mile loops on the bike. You can figure that one out, and I have a nice scar to show for one of the lapped riders that lost control in my vicinity…
A fun weekend though, it you hang out and party with some friends. I will go back one day, but only with Emilio…(-;
Won’t harp on the location… But San Clemente Island has in my opinion the best diving in Southern California. Takes several hours to get there by normal slow so cal dive boat stds, and many trips get weathered out, but if you can get there, it’s pristine, probably because it’s so far off the mainland. The Navy also sometimes closes all access due to exercises.
Ugh. You’re right. The Navy has a training facility on San Clemente and I was thinking of that when I wrtoe this but I meant Catalina. Thanks. Duh… No really, by brain is fine… only minor damage. I know I’ll fully recoverlkmnsm nsjns/NJ’s
