What does hip pain feel like?

One of the symptoms of hip pain is pain in the groin area. But how do you differentiate between hip pain and pain of the groin muscles (ex. abductor muscles)? I’ve been getting some pain in the groin region develop sometimes after a run but not sure if it could be a symptom of hip problems or a muscle pull. It doesn’t hurt when I bear weight on it and no pain doing hip rotations. I don’t walk with a limp either. When I massage the abductor muscles it feels sore but I’m wondering if this stems from problem originating in the hip. Can someone describe what hip pain feels like? Thanks.

Groin pain is just medial hip pain
.

Well, I won’t be much help. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my hips nearly 30 years ago (early 20’s). My hip pain is less when I don’t run, but still pain. My pain is a general dull ache, worse when I run lots. I also get what feels like abductor pain, but I think that might be from subtly changing my gait to limit the hip pain.

in addition to above, when I run or ride for 45 minutes or more, I get the classic crushed glass in my hip, pain. It’s excruciating, and sometimes nearly brings me to tears! Through sheer stubborness, I’ve fouind that if I run throughthe pain, after about 10 mintues, it begins to fade, but never goes away completely. My right hip is way worse, but the left hip is catching up as I get older. I am getting a worsening limp as I age too. Not enough for most people to notice, but family etc can notice it when it’s bad.

I’ve been to several doctors and all have said it’s not bad enough to warrant any intervention yet, so I simply put up with it and HTFU  For long runs I take ibuprofen before the run and it helps about 50%. In races, I don’t take the ibuprofen until the 45 minute mark when it starts to hurt. WADA rules that prophylactic use of pain killers is doping, so I don’t to it in races. Doping in training? Yeah, I guess technically I do, but WADA only covers racing (in this regard, I think.

thanks for the replies. I guess what I’m asking, is hip pain more of a deep seated pain in the general hip area or can it be a muscle pain? I recently found out I have knee arthritis so I’m wondering if it’s possible my hip might be affected to (it’s on the same side as my arthritic knee). Or if perhaps my knee arthritis is causing my abductor muscles to act funny.
